NAF to step up operational efficiency with new facilities

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has sought to step up and enhance operational efficiency and personnel welfare with the commissioning of new infrastructure projects in Lagos.

The projects, inaugurated by Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), include modern residential accommodations and upgraded facilities aimed at creating a more conducive working environment for officers and airmen.

At the commissioning ceremony in Ikeja over the weekend, Abubakar underscored the strategic importance of Lagos as a key operational hub for the NAF, housing critical units such as the Logistics Command and the 301 Heavy Airlift Group.

He also highlighted Lagos’s growing role in the global aviation and defense landscape, with the city set to host the 4th African Air Forces Forum in May and Nigeria’s first-ever international air show in December 2025.

“Lagos holds a strategic position for the Nigerian Air Force, being home to some of our key formations and units. These upcoming events will further solidify our global standing,” the CAS stated.

A statement by Olusola Akinboyewa, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, emphasized that the commissioning coincided with major milestones for the Force, including the selection of Lagos as the host city for these high-profile international events.

The CAS reaffirmed the NAF’s commitment to the welfare of its personnel, particularly through improved housing. He commissioned a block of six two-bedroom flats and another block of six three-bedroom flats for officers at Esugbayi Street in Ikeja GRA.

According to the statement, a new Non-Commissioned Officers’ (NCO) Mess, featuring nine en-suite bedrooms, two lounges, and modern amenities, was unveiled to enhance the living and working conditions of personnel.

“A secure and comfortable home ensures that military personnel can focus on their duties with stability and peace of mind.

“These facilities are not just buildings but symbols of our ongoing commitment to providing an environment that fosters excellence”, Abubakar noted.

Reflecting on his recent appointment as head of the Association of African Air Forces, a coalition of over 30 African nations partnering with the United States, the CAS stressed the importance of international collaborations in strengthening the NAF’s capabilities.

“This position provides us with a unique opportunity to build stronger partnerships, share resources, and enhance the capabilities of air forces across Africa,” he said.

The statement also mentioned that the newly commissioned projects align with NAF’s broader vision of enhancing its operational capacity while prioritizing the well-being of its personnel, reinforcing its role as a key player in regional and international air defense.
