Two police officers have sustained gunshot injuries following an attack by an angry mob on the Ala Divisional Police Headquarters in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State, after the killing of a farmer, identified as Rasheed Hassan.
The Ondo State Police Command disclosed that 14 suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack on the police facility, officers and a rescue team deployed to restore order.
The incident reportedly began after two suspects allegedly linked to Hassan’s killing were arrested and taken to the police station for further investigation. However, an angry mob reportedly pursued them and demanded that they be handed over for extrajudicial punishment.
According to a statement issued by the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, preliminary observations indicated that Hassan had sustained deep cuts to his head and other parts of his body. His belongings were also reportedly missing.
The command said investigations commenced immediately after the killing to identify and apprehend those responsible. The two suspects were reportedly arrested by the Ala Youth President on 26 October 2026 and were being conveyed to the police station when the youth leader was confronted by a mob demanding their release.
The youth leader subsequently sought refuge at the Ala Divisional Police Headquarters with the suspects. The mob allegedly followed them to the facility and launched an attack, throwing stones and other dangerous objects at the station while resisting efforts by police rescue teams to reach the area.
In response, the police deployed tactical operatives and other rescue teams to contain the violence, protect lives and prevent a further breakdown of law and order. The command said officers rescued the two suspects from the mob at about 1.45 am on Tuesday.
However, the patrol team conveying the suspects to Akure came under attack. Two police officers sustained gunshot injuries reportedly caused by pellets fired from a pump action firearm allegedly wielded by one of the youths involved in the incident.
The injured officers were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment. The police did not disclose their identities or provide further details about the severity of their injuries.
Following the violence, 14 suspects were arrested over their alleged involvement in the attack on the police station, the assault on officers and the obstruction of the rescue operation. The command said investigations were continuing to establish the individual roles of those arrested and ensure that anyone found culpable was prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, condemned the attack, describing mob action and attempts to obstruct lawful police operations as unacceptable. He warned that no individual or group had the right to take the law into their own hands, regardless of the seriousness of an alleged crime.
Ohagwu stressed that attacks on police facilities, assaults on officers and interference with lawful investigations would not be tolerated. He assured residents that the circumstances surrounding Hassan’s death and the violence that followed were being thoroughly investigated.
The command also said tactical deployments had been sustained in the area to prevent further violence. It added that normalcy had returned to the community, although security monitoring remained ongoing.
Residents were urged to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and provide credible information that could assist investigators. Community leaders and youth groups were also called upon to discourage mob action and encourage residents to allow the criminal justice system to determine the guilt or innocence of suspects.
The incident highlights the dangers of mob justice, which can undermine investigations, endanger innocent people and expose communities to further violence. The police maintained that anyone suspected of committing a crime must be investigated and prosecuted through lawful procedures rather than subjected to extrajudicial punishment.
