Pix: Mustapha with Grace this morning
By Isiaka Mustapha, Editor-in-Chief, People’s Security Monitor
An early morning conversation on the sidelines of a security related meeting with Comrade Grace Ike, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, provided an opportunity to exchange views on journalism, national security and journalists’ welfare.
As a journalist with decades of experience, I commend Grace Ike for her commitment to repositioning the council and improving its capacity to serve members. Her administration has given renewed attention to infrastructural development and efforts to create a more conducive environment for the council’s activities.
Of particular importance is her determination to improve journalists’ welfare, especially access to healthcare for practitioners in Abuja. Given the demanding nature of journalism and the risks associated with the profession, prioritising members’ health and wellbeing is a responsibility that deserves recognition.
Her engagement with stakeholders and efforts to address issues affecting members further demonstrate the importance of responsive union leadership. I encourage her to sustain these initiatives and continue pursuing practical measures that will improve the working conditions and welfare of journalists across the Federal Capital Territory.
My encounter with Comrade Grace Ike reinforced my belief that a strong union depends on committed leadership, effective representation and genuine concern for members. I wish her and the NUJ FCT Council continued success in promoting press freedom, professional excellence and journalists’ welfare.
By God’s grace, we move!
