Tinubu Orders Investigation Into Ondo Air Force Jet Crash, Mourns Victims

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the crash of a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft near a naval facility in Igbokoda, Ondo State, and directed an immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.The aircraft reportedly crashed on Monday morning while on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos, prompting emergency response efforts by military authorities and other relevant agencies.

In a statement issued by the Presidency, the President extended his condolences to the families of the 25 passengers and seven crew members on board the aircraft, as well as the leadership and personnel of the Nigerian Air Force.

Tinubu described the incident as a painful loss for both the Armed Forces and the nation, noting that military personnel continue to make enormous sacrifices in the defence of Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national security.He stated that the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, had briefed him on the development and assured that a comprehensive investigation would be carried out to determine the cause of the crash and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The President directed the Nigerian Air Force to commence a thorough inquiry into the accident, stressing the need to establish the facts surrounding the tragedy.

He also commended the Nigerian Air Force for its swift activation of search and rescue operations immediately after the incident, describing the response as timely and professional.Tinubu further praised first responders and the Ondo State Government for their prompt intervention and support at the crash site.Offering prayers for the deceased, the President asked God to grant eternal rest to the victims and provide comfort and strength to their families, colleagues and loved ones during the difficult period.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Federal Government to supporting the Nigerian Air Force in the discharge of its responsibilities, emphasising the critical role of the service in safeguarding the nation.The Presidency said further details on the crash are expected to emerge as investigations and rescue operations continue.
