Some birthdays are simply dates on the calendar. Others invite us to pause and honour a life whose journey has touched an institution and, in its own way, the nation. As Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, celebrates his 59th birthday, we mark more than another year of life. Born on September 30, 1967, in Laminga, Nasarawa State, Audi’s journey from a young volunteer officer to Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps is a story of perseverance, sacrifice and purpose.
In November 1996, Audi entered the NSCDC as a volunteer officer. Nearly three decades later, he leads the same institution in which he began his career. Along the way, he served in operations, intelligence, administration, procurement, training and command, gaining the experience that has shaped his leadership. His rise is a reflection of years spent learning, accepting responsibility and meeting the demands of public service.
Audi’s professional journey has been matched by a strong commitment to education. His academic qualifications include Physical and Health Education, Public Administration, Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, culminating in a PhD in Public Administration. His training at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, further broadened his understanding of leadership and national affairs. His career therefore combines field experience with academic preparation.
Since becoming Commandant General in 2021, Audi has overseen an expanding role for the NSCDC in Nigeria’s security architecture. The Corps has strengthened its involvement in protecting critical national assets and infrastructure, agriculture, schools, oil and gas facilities, illegal mining sites and the wider economy. Initiatives such as the Agro Rangers, Mining Marshals and Safe Schools programme have extended the Corps’ reach into areas closely connected with national development.
The work has demanded courage from personnel operating in difficult environments. Arrests of suspected economic saboteurs, destruction of illegal refineries, prosecutions and efforts to prevent school kidnappings represent only part of the operational burden carried by officers across the country. Behind these activities are personnel working long hours, confronting risks and protecting communities in the course of duty.
Audi has also promoted the use of modern tools to strengthen the Corps’ capabilities. Drones, GPS devices, body cameras, night vision equipment and improved communication systems have supported surveillance and coordination. Greater attention to specialised training, discipline and professional development has complemented these technological improvements, recognising that effective security depends on both capable personnel and appropriate equipment.
His 59th birthday marks another important stage in his career. In February 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu renewed his appointment as Commandant General for another five years. The renewed tenure offers an opportunity to consolidate existing programmes, deepen institutional reforms and further strengthen the capacity of the NSCDC to meet Nigeria’s evolving security needs.
As Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi marks 59, People’s Security Monitor celebrates a journey that began with a volunteer’s decision to serve and has led to the leadership of a national security institution. We honour the years of commitment, the responsibilities carried and the contribution made to the development of the Corps. We wish him renewed strength, wisdom, good health, peace and fulfilment, and many more productive years in the service of Nigeria. Happy 59th birthday, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi.
