The Minister of Interior, Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, accompanied by the Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has arrived in Minna, Niger State, to commiserate with Governor Mohammed Umar Bago and the people of the state following the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners at an NSCDC facility.

The visit reflects the Federal Government’s concern over the incident and its determination to engage directly with the Niger State Government and other stakeholders. The presence of Professor Audi alongside the Minister also underscores the NSCDC’s commitment to addressing the circumstances surrounding the deaths and ensuring that the facts are properly established.

Minister Tunji-Ojo’s visit is expected to provide an opportunity for the Federal Government to convey its condolences to the families of the deceased and the people of Niger State, while also reassuring stakeholders that the incident is being treated with the seriousness it deserves.

The Minister has directed a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths, while the Niger State Commandant of the NSCDC has reportedly been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. The measures are aimed at ensuring that the circumstances leading to the deaths are thoroughly examined.

Professor Audi has also taken immediate steps within the Corps to facilitate the investigation. The NSCDC Commandant General directed the constitution of a high-powered investigative team headed by the Deputy Commandant General in charge of Intelligence and Investigation to establish what transpired before, during and after the suspects’ detention.

The investigative process is expected to examine the condition of the suspects at the time of their arrest, the duration and circumstances of their custody, the conditions under which they were detained, the medical attention provided to them and other factors that may have contributed to their deaths.

Professor Audi also directed the Niger State Commandant and relevant heads of Operations, Mining, Legal, Intelligence and Investigation to report to the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja as part of the investigative process. Relevant tactical personnel have also reportedly been withdrawn to the headquarters for scrutiny.

The administrative measures taken by the NSCDC leadership are intended to facilitate an objective investigation and should not, in themselves, be interpreted as a determination of guilt or innocence against any individual. The outcome of the investigation and relevant medical examinations is expected to provide a clearer picture of what occurred.

The incident followed the reported arrest of suspected illegal miners during enforcement operations around the M.I. Wushishi/Lukoto axis of Niger State on September 15 and 16, 2026. The deaths have since generated concern among residents, stakeholders and the wider public.

The Minister’s decision to travel to Minna personally, together with Professor Audi’s continued involvement in the institutional response, places emphasis on both governmental oversight and command responsibility. Their engagement is expected to reassure the state government and affected families that the Federal Government is committed to establishing the facts.

For Professor Audi, the response has also provided an opportunity to demonstrate the importance of accountability within a security institution. By activating investigative mechanisms and directing relevant officers to report to the Corps’ headquarters, the NSCDC leadership has signalled that serious allegations involving personnel must be subjected to proper scrutiny.

The NSCDC has a statutory responsibility to combat illegal mining and protect Nigeria’s natural resources and critical national assets. However, enforcement operations are expected to be carried out within the framework of the law, with due regard for human dignity, fundamental rights and the safety and welfare of persons in custody.

The Federal Government is expected to await the outcome of the investigation before drawing definitive conclusions about the circumstances of the deaths. Medical and laboratory examinations will also be important in establishing the causes of death.

The families of the deceased and the people of Niger State deserve a transparent account of what happened, while NSCDC personnel involved in the operation are entitled to due process. A credible investigation should therefore establish the facts impartially and identify responsibility where evidence warrants it.

The visit by Minister Tunji-Ojo and Professor Audi to Minna comes at a critical stage in the unfolding investigation. Their engagement with Governor Bago and the Niger State Government is expected to strengthen coordination among the relevant authorities as the investigation proceeds.

The Federal Government’s response, coupled with the institutional measures initiated by Professor Audi, underscores the need for the tragedy to be addressed through transparency, professionalism, accountability and respect for due process.

The outcome of the investigation will be closely watched by the families of the deceased, the Niger State Government, the security community and Nigerians generally, with expectations that the truth surrounding the deaths of the 37 suspected illegal miners will be established and any necessary action taken in accordance with the law.
