The Nigerian Army has confirmed an attempted cyberattack on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, assuring the public that immediate measures have been activated to contain the breach and secure the platform.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, disclosed that the unauthorized access attempt occurred at about 5:00 p.m. on August 29, 2026.
According to the Army, the incident is being treated as a cybersecurity breach, with technical teams already working to prevent further unauthorized access and protect the integrity of information disseminated through the account.
“The Nigerian Army has detected and is actively responding to an attempted unauthorized access to its official X account. Immediate technical and protective measures have been activated to secure the account, prevent further unauthorized access, and safeguard the integrity of information shared through the platform,” the statement said.
The Army reassured the public, media organizations, and other stakeholders that efforts are underway to restore full administrative control of the account and strengthen its security architecture.
It also cautioned Nigerians against relying on any suspicious, misleading, or unverified content that may appear on the affected account during the period of investigation, stressing that such posts do not reflect the official position of the Nigerian Army.
The statement emphasized the Army’s commitment to information integrity, operational security, and responsible strategic communication, urging the public to verify information through its other official communication channels pending the resolution of the incident.
The Nigerian Army further expressed appreciation for the vigilance, understanding, and cooperation of citizens, adding that updates would be provided as the situation develops.
