On July 30, 2025, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the appointment of Deputy Controller General Samuel Olumode Adeyemi as the substantive Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, a decision that was widely applauded across the nation’s emergency management community. Effective from August 14, 2025, the appointment brought to the helm of the Service a seasoned professional whose career trajectory had been defined by discipline, competence, and an unwavering commitment to public safety.

One year later, the verdict from many stakeholders is clear: the confidence reposed in Olumode has not been misplaced. Within a relatively short period, the Federal Fire Service has witnessed a renewed sense of purpose, stronger operational coordination, improved personnel welfare, enhanced public engagement, and a determined drive towards institutional modernization. His first year has demonstrated that visionary leadership remains one of the most valuable assets in public service.

A veteran firefighter with more than two decades of operational and administrative experience, Olumode rose through the ranks after serving in both the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service and the Federal Fire Service. His extensive exposure to frontline emergency operations, personnel management, and institutional development prepared him for the enormous responsibility of leading one of Nigeria’s most strategic emergency response agencies.

Perhaps one of the most remarkable achievements recorded under his watch has been the strengthening of operational capacity nationwide. In the last year alone, the Service successfully trained and deployed more than 700 cadet firefighters across commands nationwide, significantly boosting manpower availability and emergency response capabilities. This development represents one of the largest personnel strengthening efforts undertaken by the Service in recent years.

The Olumode administration has also focused heavily on equipment revitalization. More than 40 firefighting appliances were refurbished and returned to service, while additional modern firefighting equipment and over 2,000 pieces of personal protective gear were procured and distributed. These interventions have improved operational readiness and enhanced the safety of firefighters who daily place themselves in harm’s way to save lives and property.

The impact of these reforms is increasingly visible in emergency response outcomes across the country. Available records indicate that firefighters under the Federal Fire Service and associated emergency response structures saved more than 1,700 lives and protected assets valued at over N300 billion within the first quarter of 2026 alone. These figures underscore the strategic importance of the Service and the immense value it contributes to Nigeria’s economy and national security architecture.

Beyond firefighting operations, the Controller General has invested significantly in human capital development. Specialized training programmes, including counter terrorism and emergency response courses conducted in collaboration with relevant national security agencies, have enhanced the professional competence of personnel. Such initiatives reflect an understanding that contemporary firefighting extends far beyond extinguishing fires; it encompasses disaster management, rescue operations, critical infrastructure protection, and emergency preparedness.

Equally noteworthy is his commitment to staff welfare. Under his leadership, the Service has expanded access to medical interventions for personnel, introduced interest free loan opportunities, and strengthened support systems for the families of deceased officers. These initiatives have improved morale and reinforced the confidence of personnel in the institution they serve.

Another defining feature of Olumode’s first year has been his emphasis on public enlightenment and stakeholder engagement. Through sustained advocacy, awareness campaigns, and strategic communication initiatives, the Service has continued to educate Nigerians on fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and safety consciousness. The induction and professional training of Public Relations Officers from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory further underscore the administration’s commitment to public engagement and institutional visibility.

Yet, while these achievements deserve celebration, they also highlight a critical reality: no fire service can effectively discharge its mandate without adequate funding. Across Nigeria, fire incidents continue to destroy billions of naira worth of investments annually. The cost of replacing lost infrastructure, businesses, homes, and livelihoods often far exceeds the investment required to prevent such disasters. Therefore, increased budgetary allocation to the Federal Fire Service should not be viewed as expenditure but as a strategic investment in national development and public safety.

The Federal Government must therefore sustain and expand its support for the Service through the acquisition of additional modern firefighting trucks, rescue vehicles, communication equipment, aerial firefighting platforms, protective gear, and advanced training facilities. Every state and major urban centre deserves a well equipped fire station capable of responding rapidly to emergencies. A nation of more than 200 million people cannot afford to underfund an institution whose primary responsibility is the protection of lives and property.

The National Assembly also has a critical role to play. There is an urgent need for stronger legislative frameworks that will empower the Federal Fire Service to discharge its responsibilities more effectively. Laws that enforce compliance with fire safety regulations, strengthen building safety standards, mandate functional firefighting facilities in public and private establishments, and impose stiffer penalties for violations would significantly reduce preventable fire outbreaks across the country.

The Nigerian public must equally recognize that fire safety is a shared responsibility. The repeated obstruction of fire trucks during emergencies, attacks on emergency responders, and failure to comply with safety regulations continue to undermine response efforts. Citizens must cooperate with firefighters by giving emergency vehicles the right of way, observing safety protocols, and promptly reporting fire incidents. Public partnership remains indispensable to successful emergency management.

As Samuel Adeyemi Olumode marks his first anniversary as Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, there is ample evidence that his tenure has been defined by purposeful leadership, measurable reforms, and operational progress. The journey ahead may still be long, but the foundation being laid today offers hope for a stronger, more professional, and more responsive Federal Fire Service. Against the flames and above the odds, Olumode’s first year stands as a testament to what visionary leadership, institutional commitment, and national support can achieve in the service of humanity.
