Nigeria’s Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has held high-level talks with Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Kayode Are, in Washington, D.C., as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral defence and security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States.

The strategic meeting focused on key areas of mutual interest, including counter-terrorism operations, military modernisation, deployment of advanced drone technology, satellite-based intelligence gathering, and measures aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty. The discussions underscored the importance of enhanced collaboration in addressing evolving security threats confronting Nigeria and the wider West African region.

Ambassador Are reaffirmed the Nigerian Embassy’s commitment to supporting ongoing security sector reforms and strengthening defence relations between both countries. He pledged continued diplomatic engagement to facilitate improved military training programmes, intelligence-sharing mechanisms, and access to critical defence equipment and technology that would enhance the operational capacity of Nigeria’s Armed Forces.

The meeting also examined the growing security challenges across the Sahel region, including terrorism, transnational organised crime, arms trafficking, and violent extremism. Both officials emphasized the need for stronger regional and international cooperation to effectively combat these threats and promote peace, stability, and sustainable development across the region.

General Musa highlighted the importance of strategic partnerships in addressing contemporary security challenges, noting that international cooperation remains vital in building resilient defence institutions and improving operational effectiveness. He stressed that Nigeria remains committed to working with its allies to strengthen collective security efforts and protect democratic institutions.

As part of his official engagements in Washington, the Defence Minister also visited the Defence Section of the Nigerian Embassy, where he inspected facilities and interacted with military and diplomatic personnel. He commended the officers and staff for their professionalism, dedication, and contributions to advancing Nigeria’s defence interests abroad.

The visit reflects Nigeria’s continued commitment to deepening strategic defence partnerships with key international allies while enhancing the capabilities of its security forces to address emerging threats. It also reinforces the shared determination of Nigeria and the United States to promote regional security, intelligence cooperation, and long-term stability in Africa.
