The Vigilante Groups of Nigeria (VGN) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant the organisation formal recognition and integrate it into Nigeria’s national security framework to strengthen law enforcement and community policing efforts across the country.
The group said such recognition would enable it to work more effectively alongside the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies in maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and supporting the enforcement of law and order at the grassroots level.
In a statement issued from its National Headquarters located at Gwarinpa Estate, Plot 52B, Abuja, the VGN noted that its members have continued to play vital roles in assisting security agencies, particularly in rural communities where security challenges often require local intelligence and rapid response.
According to the organisation, granting it official status as a national security agency would enhance its operational capacity and provide a legal framework for its activities across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
The group further stressed that its widespread presence at community level positions it to contribute significantly to the implementation of government policies aimed at combating crime, promoting public safety, and strengthening adherence to the rule of law throughout the country.
The statement was signed by the Grand Commander (GDC) of the Vigilante Groups of Nigeria, Mukhtar Dahiru Abdullahi Ungogo, who reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting the Federal Government and security institutions in their efforts to ensure a safer and more secure Nigeria.
