The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed that no incidents of vandalism have occurred at Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) amid ongoing protests. This announcement was made by the FCT Commandant, Dr. Olusola Odumosu, following an inspection of several key sites in Abuja on Friday. The inspection tour, reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), included visits to railway stations at Wupa, Kukwaba 1 and 2, Bassanjiwa, Gwagwa, and Idu. Dr. Odumosu also inspected the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Headquarters, Abuja Electricity Distribution Company in Wuse, FCT Water Board in Asokoro, and the Abuja Central Mosque. Dr. Odumosu commended the protesters for refraining from disrupting operations at the railway stations during the first day of demonstrations, noting, “We discovered that none of the railway corridors were tampered with by miscreants during the day-1 protest but day-2 is still ongoing.” He emphasized the importance of protecting CNAI, stating, “We have a collective duty to protect CNAI as these amenities were provided with our commonwealth. Destruction of these facilities will take us years backwards, and the NSCDC will not tolerate that.” While acknowledging the right of citizens to protest peacefully, Dr. Odumosu warned against any attempts to damage government properties and installations. He expressed concern over reports of attacks on motorists in the Lugbe area and the burning of private vehicles in Nyanya on Thursday, urging the public to seek dialogue as a means of resolving grievances. During his visit to the Idu railway station, Engr. Joseph Akinteye, Director of Transport for the FCT Administration (FCTA), praised the NSCDC personnel for their vigilance in protecting the railway stations. “We have not had any case of vandalism in a long while, this shows the commitment of your men in securing critical infrastructure in the FCT,” Akinteye said. The NSCDC remains committed to safeguarding national assets and ensuring public safety throughout the duration of the protests. |
