The Federal Fire Service has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s safety and emergency response architecture through strengthened collaboration with the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA).
This position was underscored at a workshop organised to commemorate the 2026 World Day for Safety and Health at Work, held at the Obasanjo Space Centre in Abuja.
The workshop, themed “Thriving Personnel, Precision Mission: The Human Element of Nigeria’s Space Infrastructure,” convened experts, policymakers and industry stakeholders to examine workplace safety, human capacity development and operational efficiency in critical sectors.
The event was hosted by the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NASRDA, Dr Matthew O. Adepoju. It featured key presentations from the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, alongside other stakeholders, including the Chairman of the Industrial Safety Professionals of Nigeria (ISPON), Abuja Branch, Mrs Ifeoma Okpara.
In his presentation, the Controller General emphasised the need for integrated safety systems, robust emergency preparedness and continuous personnel development as essential elements for achieving operational excellence across agencies.
A major highlight of the workshop was the recognition of a female firefighter, ASF II Ozokwere Ngozi, for her professionalism and bravery in the line of duty. She was honoured for her role in managing a fire outbreak on 11 November 2025 at approximately 3:00 pm at the general storehouse of the NigComSat headquarters in Abuja.
Her actions drew commendation from participants, as she demonstrated composure and resilience under extreme conditions, effectively containing the fire despite intense heat and heavy smoke. Her prompt intervention was credited with preventing further damage and safeguarding personnel and property.
The Controller General further stressed the importance of sustained training, improved personnel welfare and the promotion of a proactive safety culture as critical pillars for effective emergency response nationwide.
The workshop also featured goodwill messages, technical sessions and the unveiling of the NASRDA Safety Handbook, reinforcing a shared commitment to building a resilient and safety conscious work environment.
The engagement reflects ongoing efforts by the Federal Fire Service to deepen inter agency cooperation, enhance national safety standards and promote best practices in emergency preparedness and response.
