Troops of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army have dismantled a suspected camp linked to IPOB and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Imo State, recovering remains believed to be those of two soldiers killed in 2022.
The operation, conducted on 24 April 2026 along the Ubaha–Orsu axis in Orsu Local Government Area, formed part of an ongoing clearance mission targeting armed groups in the South East. The mission also sought to locate the remains of Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew, who were abducted and killed while travelling for their traditional wedding.
According to an operational update made available to defence correspondents, advancing troops encountered heavy resistance at the suspected hideout. A prolonged firefight ensued, during which soldiers repelled multiple ambush attempts and forced the attackers to retreat. Military authorities stated that while armed groups continue to resist operations, their ability to hold territory is diminishing.
A follow up sweep of the location led to the discovery of shallow graves suspected to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The site was secured and excavated, and the recovered remains have been taken for forensic analysis, including DNA testing to confirm their identities.
The Army confirmed that it is working with the families of the deceased to support identification procedures and facilitate proper burial arrangements once verification is completed.
The operation is part of a broader campaign to dismantle armed networks in the South East. Military authorities described the recovery as both a reminder of ongoing security challenges and a step towards accountability for past attacks on security personnel.
