NYSC Reaffirms Commitment to Corps Members’ Safety and Welfare

By Kunle Ajibola, Abuja

The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has reiterated that the welfare, safety and security of corps members remain a top priority and will not be compromised.

He gave the assurance while addressing members of the 2026 Batch A Stream II deployed to Niger State and the Federal Capital Territory.

Nafiu disclosed that he received reports of damage caused by a late night rainstorm at the Paiko Orientation Camp while in Makurdi. He said he promptly visited the camp to assess the situation and initiate immediate repairs, noting that while camps are not designed for luxury, they must meet acceptable standards.

He assured corps members that arrangements were underway with the Niger State Government to repair and upgrade the facility, adding that no participant would be left stranded.

The Director General also commended the discipline of corps members, observing the absence of unauthorised dissemination of images from the affected camp.

He emphasised the core objective of the scheme, describing it as a platform designed to promote national unity and integration. Corps members were encouraged to build lasting relationships throughout their service year.

On the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development programme, Nafiu noted that it provides participants with practical skills to enhance self reliance and create income opportunities.

He further disclosed that the 2026 Batch A Stream II would be eligible to serve as ad hoc personnel in the 2027 general elections under the Independent National Electoral Commission, which would provide the necessary training.

He, however, cautioned against involvement in partisan activities or any form of electoral misconduct, stressing that the scheme remains strictly non partisan.

Earlier, the NYSC Coordinator in Niger State, Mrs Martina Shuaibu Ibrahim, reported that 2,484 corps members, comprising 1,241 males and 1,243 females, were registered for the orientation course, including those redeployed from the Federal Capital Territory.
