Troops of Sector 2 under Operation Hadin Kai have successfully foiled coordinated attacks by fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province on a military position in Goniri, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State, killing more than 20 insurgents after a fierce battle that lasted from the night of 9 March into the early hours of 10 March 2026.
Security sources disclosed that the terrorists attempted a coordinated assault on the military location from different directions, advancing from Goniri village and the Ngamdu axis. However, the movement of the insurgents was detected early by vigilant troops who immediately engaged them with superior firepower and well coordinated tactical defence.
The troops reportedly mounted a strong resistance, preventing the attackers from gaining access to the military position. Reinforcements were swiftly deployed to the area while troops intensified their defensive operations to contain the threat and protect the location.
During the operation, the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai provided close air support, striking the insurgents’ positions and forcing them to retreat in disarray. Military sources confirmed that the terrorists suffered heavy casualties during the encounter, with more than 20 fighters neutralised.
Among those killed was a senior insurgent commander identified as Abu Yusu, who was said to be the Munzir of Dursula. Troops also recovered several weapons, improvised explosive devices, bombs, and assorted ammunition abandoned by the fleeing insurgents during the retreat.
Further clearance operations conducted by troops in Gwaigomari within the Timbuktu Triangle led to the discovery of additional terrorist bodies during patrols that continued until 11 March. Injured soldiers were evacuated for medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition, while the military confirmed that the area remains under firm control as ground and air forces sustain aggressive search operations.
