Safety Alert to Gombe ResidentsThe Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Command

The Federal Fire Service, Gombe State Command, has issued a public safety advisory following a recent surge in fire outbreaks across parts of Gombe metropolis, warning that the incidents pose serious threats to lives, businesses, and critical public infrastructure.
The Service noted that although the fires have resulted in significant losses, many of the incidents were preventable. It therefore urged residents, business owners, and operators of public and private facilities to adopt strict fire safety practices, particularly in the handling of electrical appliances, gas equipment, and other potential ignition sources.
According to the Fire Service, one of the major challenges encountered during emergency response is the delay in reporting fire outbreaks. The Command stressed that early notification remains the most effective way to minimise damage and save lives.
Fire officials explained that prompt reporting enables firefighters to contain and extinguish fires before they escalate. In contrast, delayed alerts often allow fires to spread beyond immediate control, forcing responders to focus on protecting nearby structures rather than salvaging affected properties.
The Service emphasised that early reporting not only preserves lives and property but also saves critical response time during emergencies.
As part of its advisory, the Federal Fire Service outlined key fire safety guidelines for the public. Residents were cautioned against overloading electrical sockets and advised to switch off and unplug appliances when not in use. The Service also urged property owners to regularly inspect electrical installations and engage qualified electricians to fix faulty wiring and substandard fittings.
Members of the public were further advised to handle gas cylinders and flammable materials safely, store them away from heat sources, and routinely check for leaks. Matches, lighters, and candles should be kept out of the reach of children, while combustible materials such as refuse, fuel, paper, and dry vegetation should be cleared from around buildings.
The Service also encouraged households, offices, markets, hotels, and public buildings to install and maintain functional fire extinguishers and smoke detectors as part of basic fire protection measures.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the Federal Fire Service stated that fire prevention is a shared responsibility and called for sustained public cooperation to build a fire resilient community in Gombe State.
The Command also commended the Gombe State Command of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies for their continued support, which enables firefighters to operate safely and respond effectively to emergencies.
Residents were advised to promptly contact the Federal Fire Service in the event of fire or related emergencies through the Gombe State Command on 070 3149 7455 or the National Headquarters on 080 3200 3557.
