In a significant move to bolster Nigeria’s internal security, the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has highlighted the strategic importance of the ongoing state visit by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Türkiye. Speaking from Ankara, the Minister emphasized that Nigeria is ready to leverage Türkiye’s extensive experience in counter-terrorism to address its own security challenges.
General Musa noted that Türkiye once faced similar waves of terrorism and successfully navigated these hurdles through a rapid and determined buildup of military capacity. He pointed out that the Turkish government’s ability to hasten the development of homegrown technology and equipment serves as a vital blueprint for Nigeria’s “Renewed Hope” security agenda.
According to the Minister, the Nigerian delegation has already held series of highly productive discussions with Turkish defense officials. These talks have focused primarily on three pillars: advanced tactical training for personnel, the local production of military hardware, and the sharing of critical intelligence to stay ahead of evolving threats.
The Minister expressed confidence in the partnership, revealing that the Turkish government has provided firm assurances of its total support. This commitment aims to bridge the gap in Nigeria’s current defense capabilities, ensuring that the Armed Forces are equipped with the modern tools necessary to finally dismantle insurgent networks.
Crucially, General Musa disclosed that President Tinubu and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan have reached a personal agreement to fast-track all defense-related actions. The two leaders have signaled that the partnership will move beyond diplomatic pleasantries into immediate, tangible results for the safety of both nations.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation back home, the Defence Minister stressed that “time is of the essence.” He stated that the Nigerian government cannot afford delays in its quest to stabilize the country, making the swift implementation of these international agreements a top priority for the Ministry.
To ensure these plans do not stall, the Minister confirmed that the government is already activating action on all existing and new agreements between Nigeria and Türkiye. This activation involves setting up technical committees and timelines to oversee the transfer of technology and the commencement of joint military exercises.
The defense collaboration is expected to be one of the most enduring legacies of this state visit. As General Musa concluded, the synergy between Abuja and Ankara represents a “new dawn” for Nigeria’s defense industry, promising a future where the nation is better equipped to protect its territorial integrity and its citizens.
