The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has approved the appointment of Captain Abiodun Abidemi Folorunsho as the new Director of Naval Information and Spokesperson of the Nigerian Navy. He officially assumed duty on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, taking over from Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who has been redeployed as the Commander of Nigerian Navy Ship BEECROFT, the Navy’s premier operational base.
Captain Folorunsho is a highly trained senior naval officer with extensive operational, academic, and administrative experience. He is a graduate of the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, and holds multiple postgraduate degrees in War Studies, International Affairs, Energy Management, and National Security from institutions in Nigeria, Pakistan, Sweden, and the United States.
In the course of his career, the new Naval Spokesperson has attended several local and international professional courses, including the Junior and Senior Staff Courses, Naval Warfare Course, United Nations Staff Officers Course, and the Higher Defence Management Course at the United States Naval War College. He has served onboard various Nigerian Navy ships and in key shore appointments across operational, instructional, and strategic environments.
Captain Folorunsho has also held sensitive national and international assignments, including service with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, directing roles at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and senior management positions at the Naval Dockyard Limited, Lagos, where he contributed to indigenous shipbuilding efforts. Until his latest appointment, he served at the Naval Headquarters as Assistant Director Plans and Chief Instructor in Maritime Warfare.
A multiple award recipient, Captain Folorunsho has been recognised for academic excellence and meritorious service by the Nigerian Navy and the United Nations. He brings strong public communication and protocol management experience to his new role. He is married with two children.
