CGF Olumode Places Federal Fire Service on Full Alert Nationwide and Launches Harmattan Fire Safety Campaign

The Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service, Olumode Samuel Adeyemi, FCNA, ACTI, has directed a no-leave, no-holiday regime for all officers and personnel of the Service nationwide throughout the harmattan season and the yuletide period. The directive is aimed at ensuring full operational readiness to effectively respond to fire outbreaks and other dry-season–related emergencies.

The directive was issued during a virtual meeting with Zonal Controllers, where the Controller-General formally launched the nationwide Harmattan Fire Safety Campaign. The campaign is a proactive initiative designed to reduce the incidence of fires during the harmattan period, which is characterised by dry weather conditions, increased combustibility, and heightened festive activities.

Addressing the meeting, the Controller-General cautioned members of the public against the use of fireworks, bush burning, and the unsafe storage or transportation of flammable materials, noting that such practices significantly increase fire risks during the season. He stressed that prevention remains the most effective strategy for safeguarding lives, property, and critical infrastructure.

To strengthen preparedness, the Controller-General directed all zones to immediately submit reports on the operational status of firefighting appliances within their areas of responsibility. He also announced plans to establish a Harmattan Monitoring Task Force to track fire incidents, enforce compliance with safety measures, and coordinate response efforts throughout the season. In addition, zonal and state commands were instructed to carry out fire safety inspections at worship centres and other public places, particularly during festive gatherings, while intensifying public sensitisation activities.

The Controller-General further underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration, directing commands to work closely with sister security and emergency agencies at the state level and to share intelligence that would enhance prevention, early warning, and rapid response.

The meeting reaffirmed the Federal Fire Service’s resolve to remain fully mobilised, proactive, and responsive in protecting lives and property nationwide during the high-risk harmattan and festive period.
