Tinubu Approves Nigerian Army Training Depot in Ebonyi to Boost National Security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a Nigerian Army Training Depot in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and expand military training capacity nationwide.

The decision marks a significant step in the decentralisation of military infrastructure, bringing a major army training facility to the South-East for the first time. With the new approval, the number of Nigerian Army training depots will increase to three, joining the existing facilities in Kaduna and Osogbo.

A statement from the Presidency explained that the initiative aligns with the Tinubu administration’s broader security reform agenda, which focuses on troop expansion, modernised training methods, and regional balance in defence operations.

The Abakaliki training depot is expected to train thousands of recruits annually, supporting the ongoing recruitment exercise projected to add over 7,000 personnel to the Nigerian Army in the coming months.

Nigeria is currently grappling with multiple security challenges, including banditry in the North-West, insurgency in the North-East, as well as communal conflicts and criminal activities in parts of the South-East. The new depot is expected to ease pressure on northern-based training centres and enable faster deployment of trained personnel to areas facing security threats.

Recent footage circulating online, reportedly from the Osogbo Army Training Depot, has further underscored the need for expanded training infrastructure. In the video, a senior army officer emphasised the importance of advanced, technology-driven training as more than 3,500 new recruits prepare to commence specialised programmes.

According to the officer, the Nigerian Army is integrating technology into its training processes, including indoor shooting ranges and enhanced tactical simulations designed to prepare soldiers for border security duties, counter-insurgency operations, and other high-risk assignments.

Reacting to the approval, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, described the project as a major boost to security and youth development in the state. He pledged the state government’s full cooperation, including land provision and infrastructural support, to ensure the timely completion of the facility.

Community leaders and residents of Abakaliki have also welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the training depot will create jobs, stimulate local economic activities, and improve overall security in the area.

The approval adds to a series of defence-sector initiatives under President Tinubu’s administration, including recent Senate-endorsed military engagements beyond Nigeria’s borders aimed at promoting democratic stability in West Africa.

However, some civil society organisations have urged the federal government to complement the expansion of military infrastructure with greater transparency in defence spending and stronger anti-corruption safeguards.

The Nigerian Army has assured residents that construction activities will be carried out with minimal disruption. The Abakaliki Army Training Depot is expected to become operational within the next 18 to 24 months, marking a key milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to build a more responsive and resilient security force.
