DHQ Dismisses Coup Rumours, Reaffirms Unwavering Loyalty to Democracy

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has categorically refuted widespread rumours alleging a coup attempt within the military ranks, describing such reports as baseless, malicious, and a deliberate attempt to incite fear and distrust among citizens.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Saturday, the DHQ clarified that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary had no connection whatsoever with any alleged coup plot. The military leadership insisted that the claims were the handiwork of mischief-makers bent on destabilizing national unity and eroding public confidence in the Armed Forces.

According to Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, “The attention of the Defence Headquarters has been drawn to a false and misleading publication linking the suspension of Independence Day celebrations to a purported coup attempt. The claims are entirely false, malicious, and intended to create unnecessary panic.”

The DHQ explained that the decision to suspend the traditional October 1st parade was purely administrative, occasioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s engagement in a high-level bilateral meeting abroad. The parade’s cancellation, Gusau added, also allowed members of the Armed Forces to sustain their momentum in ongoing counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations across various regions of the country.

“The President’s absence due to a strategic international engagement, coupled with the need to maintain operational efficiency in multiple theatres of combat, informed the decision to shelve the ceremonial parade,” he clarified.

On the reports alleging the arrest of 16 officers—ranging from Captain to Brigadier General—over a supposed coup plot, the military emphasized that the investigation involving those officers was strictly an internal disciplinary process. It stated that such routine procedures are consistent with the Armed Forces’ commitment to professionalism, ethics, and accountability.

“The ongoing investigation of sixteen officers is a normal internal mechanism to enforce discipline and uphold the integrity of the military. An investigative panel has been constituted, and its findings will be made public upon conclusion,” the statement read.

While the DHQ refrained from revealing the nature of the infractions, it assured that due process would be followed in line with established military protocols. The high command further reaffirmed that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain firmly loyal to the Constitution and the democratically elected government of President Tinubu.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain resolute in their loyalty to the Commander-in-Chief and the democratic order. Our commitment to the rule of law and constitutional governance is unshakable. Democracy is forever,” Gusau reiterated.

The Defence Headquarters also condemned the actions of certain online platforms that published the false report without verification, warning that the dissemination of unsubstantiated information poses a grave threat to national stability.

Civil society organizations and security analysts have similarly expressed concern over the rising trend of misinformation. The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) cautioned that spreading falsehoods about sensitive national security matters could endanger peace and undermine democratic institutions.

“The spread of misinformation regarding national security is dangerous and irresponsible. Media professionals must exercise due diligence and verify facts before publication,” said Idayat Hassan, Director of the CDD.

Observers note that Nigeria, given its history of military interventions before the return to democracy in 1999, remains particularly sensitive to coup-related rumours. However, recent years have seen a visible institutional shift within the Armed Forces toward professionalism and regional leadership in peacekeeping and counter-insurgency operations.

Analysts argue that the prompt response from the DHQ helped forestall unnecessary panic, reaffirming the military’s role as a stabilizing force in Nigeria’s democratic evolution. They commend the institution’s transparency and swift communication as a sign of maturity in handling sensitive national issues.

In an era marked by social media sensationalism, the DHQ’s intervention serves as a reminder that maintaining public trust in governance and security structures requires constant vigilance, open communication, and truthfulness.

As the Defence Headquarters concluded, “The Armed Forces will continue to safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty and defend its democracy. Our loyalty to the nation and its people is absolute.”

Indeed, for a country still navigating economic and political complexities, this firm declaration reinforces a simple but powerful message — Nigeria’s democracy remains non-negotiable.
