‎INEC KWARA SEEKS STRONGER SYNERGY WITH 22 ARMOURED BRIGADE

‎In a bid to enhance inter-agency collaboration ahead of upcoming electoral activities, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kwara State, Dr. Hale Gabriel Longpet, has called for a stronger partnership between the Commission and the 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army.

‎This call was made during a courtesy visit to the Brigade Headquarters at Sobi Cantonment, Ilorin, on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

‎During the visit, Dr. Longpet praised Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, for his efforts in maintaining and strengthening the existing relationship between INEC and the military. He emphasised the crucial role the Army plays in ensuring the success of electoral operations, drawing from his experiences in Kogi State.

‎“It is customary to consult with relevant stakeholders whenever you arrive at a new place of assignment. Since resuming my duties in June, I have been meeting with security agencies to build the necessary support structure for a successful tenure. The Nigerian Army is an institution we cannot do without. On several occasions, I have relied on soldiers for assistance. Their presence not only ensures security but also instils confidence in the public to participate in electoral activities,” Dr. Longpet remarked.

‎He also briefed the Brigade on INEC’s upcoming activities in the state, particularly the continuous online voter registration exercise scheduled to begin on August 22, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily. He urged the military to provide support in creating a secure environment for this exercise, which will take place across all 16 local government areas of the state.

‎“Without the Army, many of these planned activities may not be feasible. The presence of uniformed personnel reassures citizens of their safety,” he added.

‎In response, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins assured the REC of the Brigade’s commitment to supporting INEC in its duties, pledging full cooperation for a successful electoral process in the state.

‎“We sincerely appreciate your visit. The 22 Armoured Brigade is dedicated to supporting INEC’s operations and ensuring peace and security across Kwara State. Our phone lines are open for your call any time you need our service we shall oblige,” the Commander stated.

‎General Barkins also reiterated that security is a collective responsibility and encouraged continued collaboration between INEC and the military, highlighting that the Army has Forward Operating Bases and Patrol Bases in all 16 local government areas.

‎The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs and a group photograph, symbolising the strengthened bond between both institutions.
