Commander John Attah Onoja Extols NSCDC Commandant General, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, Lauds His Visionary Leadership As He Clinches NUJ Prestigious Award

At a prestigious award ceremony hosted by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, Commander John Attah Onoja, Head of the NSCDC Special Mining Marshals, received accolades for his dedication, patriotism, and unwavering service in the protection of Nigeria’s mineral wealth.

The event, held in Abuja, was a moment of recognition not only for his personal sacrifice but also for the visionary leadership of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, whom Onoja credited as the architect of the Special Mining Marshals initiative.

In his acceptance speech, Commander Onoja delivered a powerful tribute to Professor Audi, lauding him as a “transformational leader, a courageous reformer, and a true patriot.” He credited the Commandant General’s foresight and strategic thinking for establishing the Special Mining Marshals, a dedicated enforcement unit that has since disrupted the activities of illegal mining cartels, safeguarded the country’s mineral assets, and restored order in the extractive sector.

“This award belongs first to the man whose foresight created the Special Mining Marshals. Professor Ahmed Audi not only envisioned this unit but empowered us with the tools, strategy, and moral backing to deliver results. His leadership has been the foundation of our progress,” Onoja stated.

While basking in the honour, Onoja did not shy away from revealing the serious dangers and challenges faced by officers under his command. As the head of field operations combating illegal mining often in remote, volatile, and lawless environments, he spoke of the daily risks, including violent confrontations, ambushes, and direct threats to his life.

“We’re not dealing with petty criminals. These are highly organized syndicates, backed by money and firepower. I’ve had close encounters with armed attackers, and many of my men have been injured or threatened. It’s a war; not just of bullets, but of will and courage,” he said.

Commander Onoja noted the psychological burden of leading operations where officers are stretched thin, working day and night in forests, mountains, and border areas to intercept stolen mineral resources. Despite these risks, he reaffirmed his loyalty to the Corps and his commitment to the mission, emphasizing that the Commandant General’s trust in his leadership has been a source of personal and professional motivation.

“If I have the courage to keep going, it is because I know I carry the vision of a leader who refuses to let Nigeria be robbed in silence. I dedicate this award to Professor Ahmed Audi and to every brave officer under my command.”

In her keynote address, Comrade Grace Ike, Chairperson of the NUJ FCT Council, highlighted the selection of Commander Onoja as a symbol of integrity, courage, and professionalism in Nigeria’s security landscape. She described him as a “rare breed of public servant” who has shown uncommon commitment to duty, often operating away from public spotlight but delivering exceptional impact.

“At a time when Nigeria is bleeding from resource theft, it is men like Commander John Onoja who are holding the line. He has consistently demonstrated patriotism, discipline, and bravery in confronting powerful economic saboteurs. The NUJ decided to honour him because of the silent battles he fights daily for the nation’s survival,” Comrade Ike declared.

She further stated that the NUJ conducted an independent review of reports, community feedback, and field accomplishments of various public officers, and Onoja’s name consistently stood out as one of the most dedicated and results-driven security operatives in the country.

“We’re not just giving awards; we are giving national validation to those who work with sincerity and sacrifice. Commander Onoja’s work in protecting Nigeria’s minerals is commendable, and this award is not just deserved, it is long overdue.”

Comrade Ike also used the opportunity to urge greater media attention on environmental crimes and resource theft, calling for stronger partnerships between journalists and security agencies like the NSCDC to expose and dismantle illegal mining operations across the country.

The ceremony, attended by top government functionaries, media executives, civil society leaders, and NSCDC officials, served as a powerful reminder of the unsung heroes working behind the scenes to defend Nigeria’s economy. The contributions of the Special Mining Marshals under Onoja’s leadership ranging from the sealing of illegal mining sites to the arrest of perpetrators and recovery of stolen resources were highlighted as critical steps in restoring national integrity in the mining sector.

In conclusion, Command John Attah Onoja reaffirmed his resolve to intensify operations, despite the risks, and to remain loyal to the Commandant General’s mission of protecting Nigeria’s mineral wealth for future generations.

“This award is not just a recognition; it is a call to do more. I am deeply humbled, and I promise to keep fighting for this country, for justice, and for the dignity of honest work. With Professor Audi’s guidance, we will not retreat,” he said.

The crowd erupted in applause as Onoja received his award plaque, standing tall not only as a decorated officer but as a symbol of resilience, national service, and the quiet power of conviction.
