The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has revealed that troops of Operation Safe Haven turned down a ₦13.7 million bribe offered by terrorists during an operation along the Jos–Sanga Road in Plateau State.
Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, made this known on Thursday during a press briefing on ongoing military operations across the country, held in Abuja.
According to Kangye, troops were responding to a distress call regarding terrorist activity in the area when they intercepted two suspects, who attempted to offer them ₦13.7 million in cash to avoid arrest.
“The troops rejected the bribe and proceeded to arrest the suspects. A vehicle, weapons, ammunition, and the ₦13.7 million were recovered. The items are currently in custody while investigations continue,” Kangye stated.
He further disclosed that the troops carried out a series of offensive operations and rapid response missions in Plateau State’s Bassa, Barkin Ladi, South Wase, Riyom, and Jos East Local Government Areas. Similar operations were also conducted in Kaura and Sanga LGAs of Kaduna State.
During these engagements, troops neutralized several extremists, arrested 12 suspects, and rescued three kidnapped victims. Recovered items included firearms, rounds of ammunition, motorcycles, vehicles, and illicit drugs.
Kangye also reported that troops on routine patrol apprehended seven militia members and criminal suspects across Barkin Ladi and Jos South LGAs in Plateau, as well as Wamba in Nasarawa and Sanga in Kaduna State.
Commending the soldiers for their professionalism and dedication, Kangye said, “Their refusal to be compromised and their success in intercepting criminal elements underscores the commitment of the Nigerian military to integrity and national security.”
He urged citizens to remain alert and cooperative, emphasizing that public support is vital to the military’s efforts.
“As operations intensify, the public is encouraged to report any suspicious activity to security agencies. We also call on the media to continue supporting this mission by helping disseminate accurate and timely information,” Kangye concluded.
