NIGERIAN ARMY CELEBRATES ITS VETERANS, URGES THEM TO KEEP SUPPORTING THE MILITARY 

 

The Nigerian Army (NA) has organized a special Get-together session with its  veterans within Jos and its environ. This significant event is one of the series of activities to earmarked to celebrate 161 years of commitment, resilience, and selfless service to the nation and humanity.

It was an evening filled with camaraderie, memories, and providing an opportunity to celebrate the rich history and legacy of the Nigerian Army. The get-together is designed to foster a sense of belonging among the veterans and a gesture to express gratitude, respect, and appreciation for their commitment and dedication to safeguarding the nation’s security and preserving its sovereignty.

Speaking at the Gowon Hall, Crispan Hotel, Jos, Plateau State, former Chief of Army and Defence Staff, General Martín Luther Agwai (rtd) praised the veterans for their selfless service and urged them to sustain the camaraderie and cordial relations alive. General Agwai, who was the Special Guest of Honour, urged veterans to continue relating with each other, provide useful information, and support those in service.

He advised those in service to take the veterans into confidence by providing them with necessary information that will assist in confronting the challenges of national security.

He lauded to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja for organizing the event, where soldiers get together and reminisce, urging the veterans to support the military in its efforts to protect the country.

Speaking on the significance of the event, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja noted that the event was rooted in the NA’s celebration of its 161th year of existence, adding that the history, and importance attached to the celebration are well known to the serving and retired personnel.

The COAS explained that the event is dedicated to celebrating and honouring the NA veterans who served, discharged, or retired meritoriously. He maintained that the veterans sacrificed the pleasure and freedom of civilian life, to take up a profession that demanded their freedom, family time, and other valuables.

Speaking further, the COAS pointed out, that the NA is commemorating not only the valour, and sacrifices of serving personnel, but also the enduring spirit of unity, resilience, and patriotism that defined NA veterans.

The Army Chief stressed that the veterans are the strength and fortitude that carry Nigeria in the most challenging times. He disclosed that the NA veterans, composed of those who served in World Wars 1 and 2, stood tall during the Nigerian civil war, defended the Nigerian territory during the crises over Bakassi Peninsula, hoisted the Nigerian flag in various peace support operations. 

The COAS also acknowledged the service of the fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price for Nigeria’s freedom and security.

The event featured a variety show, a cultural  display, and the presentation of souvenirs to deserving retired officers and soldiers .

Dignitaries who graced the occasion are former Chief of Army and Defence Staff, General Martin Luther Agwai, Principal Staff Officers from Defence and Services Headquarters, serving and retired senior officers, amongst several others.
