In a major move to bolster security in Nigeria’s northeastern region, the Nigerian Armed Forces has announced plans to establish a new military sector command in Mubi, Adamawa State.
The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, made the disclosure during a courtesy visit to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri at the Government House in Yola. He was accompanied by a delegation of senior military officers from the Defence Headquarters.
According to General Musa, the decision to situate a new sector command in Mubi stems from the growing threat posed by non-state actors, particularly those infiltrating through the Hong local government area.
“We are rehabilitating the military barracks in Mubi to ensure the new command becomes fully operational,” the CDS stated. “The aim is to decisively confront the insurgents exploiting our porous borders and disrupting peace in the region.”
General Musa highlighted the need for a robust military presence in the area, noting that the Nigerian Air Force would also be reinforced to provide rapid response capabilities.
Despite Adamawa’s proximity to international borders, the state has remained relatively calm — a development Musa credited to the support of the state government. He praised Governor Fintiri for his cooperation and commitment to national security.
In his remarks, Governor Fintiri welcomed the military’s move and pledged the full support of the state government.
“When the military succeeds in the field, my people can sleep in peace,” he said. “The decision to establish a sector command in Mubi is timely, especially in light of recent attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP in Madagali and Hong.”
The governor expressed concern about the security threats along the Hong axis and called for increased deployment of troops in that corridor. He also advocated for the regular rotation of military personnel across the state to enhance operational effectiveness.
“As part of our local initiatives, we’re also empowering hunters to work alongside security agencies. It’s a joint effort to defend our communities,” he added.
Governor Fintiri concluded by commending the Nigerian Armed Forces for their ongoing sacrifice in combating insecurity and reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to provide necessary logistical and moral support for the success of the new command.
