On Wednesday, 20th November 2024, I had the privilege of attending the grand opening ceremony of the second edition of the All-Africa Military Games Abuja (AMGA) 2024, held at the prestigious Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, Nigeria. This highly anticipated military sports festival was officially declared open by the Vice President of Nigeria, His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima, GCON.

With the theme “Enhancing Military Cooperation Through Sports,” AMGA 2024 aims to strengthen military solidarity across Africa, celebrate the continent’s rich cultural diversity, and foster unity among nations. The opening ceremony was a spectacle of vibrant celebrations, featuring a magnificent display of military parades by contingents from participating African nations, showcasing their discipline and pride.

In his inspiring address, Vice President Shettima warmly welcomed participants to Abuja, emphasizing the vital role of the games in bridging divides and promoting unity among African countries. He highlighted that the games are not just a platform for competition but also a reflection of Africa’s collective identity and determination to tackle shared challenges through cooperation.

The Chief of Defence Staff of Nigeria, General Christopher Gwabin Musa OFR, echoed these sentiments, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening collaboration within the Organisation of Military Sports in Africa (OMSA). He reiterated the significance of the event as an opportunity for African armed forces to engage in healthy competition, share knowledge, and forge relationships that enhance regional stability and security.

The ceremony reached its crescendo with a dazzling fireworks display and the ceremonial lighting of the AMGA 2024 torch, symbolizing the commencement of a spirited celebration of sportsmanship, resilience, and military camaraderie across the continent. The evening also featured enthralling musical performances by internationally acclaimed Nigerian artists, further amplifying the celebratory atmosphere.

As the games progress, athletes will vie for medals and trophies in various sports, highlighting the values of teamwork, excellence, and unity that define the spirit of AMGA. The event also promises to leave an indelible mark on participants and spectators, reinforcing the importance of sports in promoting peace and cooperation across Africa.
