Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a 100 level female student of Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, and shot another person during an attack on an off campus student residential area in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 8:40pm on Saturday, November 1, 2026, raising fresh concerns over the security of students residing outside the university campus.
A student, who spoke to journalists in Jos on Sunday on condition of anonymity, confirmed the abduction, explaining that the victim had reportedly gone out with another female student when she was seized by the attackers. He said the abducted student had not been seen since the incident.
The student expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Bokkos and appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue the victim safely. A university staff member also confirmed that the institution was aware of a reported shooting in an off campus residential area, describing it as the second similar incident within four weeks.
The staff member, who declined to be identified because he was not authorised to speak publicly, said the university was deeply concerned about threats to the safety of students living outside its premises. He stressed that although the incident occurred beyond the campus, the institution remained committed to engaging relevant authorities to improve student security.
He disclosed that the university administration, under Vice Chancellor Professor Shadrack Best, had been making efforts to provide secure accommodation for students. However, he said financial constraints had limited the institution’s hostel capacity to approximately 1,000 students, despite having a student population of nearly 20,000.
The university reportedly acknowledged the support of Plateau State Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang and the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) in developing critical infrastructure, while pledging to pursue improved accommodation and security. Efforts to obtain comments from the Plateau State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Alfred Alabo, were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
