The Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting national security efforts and strengthening community-based security as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary. The National Chairman and Commander-General of the VGN, Otunba James Udoma, stated this in an Independence Day message in which he acknowledged the security challenges confronting the country and paid tribute to the nation’s security personnel and citizens contributing to national stability.
Udoma described the resilience, resourcefulness and determination of Nigerians as one of the country’s greatest strengths, noting that citizens continue to contribute to the nation’s progress despite prevailing challenges. He said the VGN, with its presence in communities, streets and highways across the country, remained committed to its role in supporting the protection of lives and property and complementing the efforts of statutory security agencies.
According to him, community-based security remains important to effective crime prevention, particularly through vigilance, timely information sharing, community engagement and cooperation with relevant security institutions. The VGN leader acknowledged the impact of insecurity, banditry, kidnapping, communal conflicts and other criminal activities on Nigerian families and communities.
He noted that many families had lost loved ones, while others had been displaced from their homes as a result of insecurity, stressing that the suffering caused by these challenges must be recognised and addressed.“The insecurity of today is not Nigeria’s destiny; it is a chapter, not the whole story,” Udoma said, stressing the need for continued commitment by citizens and security institutions to restoring safety and stability. He commended the Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices and dedication to protecting the nation.
He also acknowledged Nigerians who, through their various contributions, continue to support the peace, stability and development of the country.Udoma said the VGN would continue to work within its mandate to support security efforts at the grassroots, strengthen cooperation with relevant agencies and encourage responsible community participation in crime prevention.
He stressed that effective security requires sustained collaboration among security agencies, community-based organisations and members of the public, particularly in the areas of intelligence sharing and early identification of security threats.
The VGN National Chairman and Commander-General congratulated Nigerians on the 66th Independence Anniversary and prayed for God’s continued blessings upon the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He expressed the organisation’s commitment to contributing to the emergence of a safer, more secure and stable Nigeria
