The Federal Fire Service (FFS) on September 17, 2026, conducted a fire safety awareness programme and evacuation simulation exercise at the headquarters of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness and enhance fire safety consciousness among staff and other building occupants.The exercise was organised to assess the readiness of personnel to respond effectively to fire emergencies while improving their understanding of established safety procedures and evacuation protocols.A team from the Special Duties Unit of the Federal Fire Service, led by Chief Superintendent of Fire Dooshima Denis, carried out the exercise, while Chief Superintendent of Fire Oduye Oluseyi coordinated the evacuation drill. The Special Duties Unit operates under the Inspection, Investigation and Enforcement Department, headed by Assistant Controller General of Fire B. T. Muhammed.During the simulation, participants were guided through practical evacuation procedures, with emphasis placed on maintaining calm during emergencies, using designated escape routes, avoiding elevators, assisting vulnerable persons where necessary and assembling at designated muster points for accountability. Occupants were also advised against re-entering evacuated buildings until clearance is given by authorised emergency responders.As part of the awareness campaign, fire officers educated participants on the various classes of fire extinguishers and their appropriate applications. The team also demonstrated the PASS technique for operating fire extinguishers: Pull the safety pin, Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, Squeeze the handle and Sweep from side to side across the fire source. In addition, practical demonstrations were conducted on the proper use of fire blankets for controlling minor fire outbreaks.The exercise provided staff with valuable hands-on experience in emergency response and reinforced the importance of prompt action, orderly evacuation and adherence to safety guidelines during fire incidents.The Federal Fire Service reaffirmed its commitment to promoting fire safety across public and private institutions, urging organisations to institutionalise regular evacuation drills and fire safety education programmes as critical measures for safeguarding lives, protecting property and fostering a culture of preparedness.
