The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Yobe State Command, has arrested five suspects, including a 42 year old woman, Nancy Benedict, for allegedly processing and packaging meat from dead cattle for sale and human consumption.The Command said the suspects were apprehended during an operation aimed at safeguarding public health and preventing the distribution of unsafe food products within the state. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were allegedly involved in slaughtering, cutting and packaging meat from cattle that had died under questionable circumstances before making efforts to sell the products to unsuspecting members of the public.According to the NSCDC, the arrest followed credible intelligence that led operatives to the location where the illicit activity was being carried out. Various quantities of processed meat and other items believed to be connected to the operation were reportedly recovered during the raid.The Command expressed concern over the potential health risks posed by the consumption of meat obtained from dead animals, warning that such practices could expose consumers to serious diseases and food borne infections. It reiterated its commitment to protecting residents from activities that endanger public safety and wellbeing.NSCDC officials disclosed that the suspects are currently in custody and are assisting investigators with useful information. They added that further inquiries are ongoing to determine the full extent of the operation and identify any additional individuals connected to the alleged illegal enterprise.The Command urged livestock traders, butchers and food vendors to adhere strictly to established health and safety regulations, stressing that anyone found engaging in practices capable of jeopardising public health would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.It also called on members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities relating to food processing, livestock handling and other matters that could threaten community health. The Corps assured residents that it would continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to ensure that only safe and wholesome food products reach consumers.The arrest highlights ongoing efforts by security and regulatory authorities to combat food related offences and strengthen public confidence in the safety of products sold in markets across the state. Authorities said the outcome of the investigation would guide further enforcement actions aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
