Troops Rescue Women, Children After Three Years in Terrorist Captivity in Borno

By Tunji Braimoh, Abuja

Nigerian troops have rescued two women and two children who were held captive by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents for nearly three years in Borno State.

The rescue was carried out during a military operation in Kukawa Local Government Area, one of the regions most affected by insurgent activities in Nigeria’s North-East. The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by security forces to dismantle terrorist strongholds and secure the release of civilians trapped in areas previously controlled by the extremists.

Military sources disclosed that the victims had endured years of hardship while in captivity before regaining their freedom. The sustained pressure mounted by troops on terrorist enclaves reportedly forced the insurgents to abandon some hideouts, creating an opportunity for the successful rescue.

Following their recovery, the women and children were evacuated to a secure location where they are receiving medical care, psychological support and other humanitarian assistance to aid their rehabilitation and reintegration.

The latest rescue highlights the continued gains being recorded by Operation Hadin Kai and other security operations aimed at degrading the operational capabilities of Boko Haram and ISWAP in the Lake Chad region.

Security analysts say the development demonstrates the impact of sustained military offensives and intelligence-driven operations in weakening terrorist networks and restoring hope to affected communities. They, however, note that continued vigilance remains necessary as insurgent groups still pose security threats in parts of the North-East.

Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining operations against terrorist elements, assuring residents that efforts will continue until all remaining captives are freed and lasting peace is restored across the region.
