TheController-General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), OlumodeSamuelAdeyemi, has appealed to motorists across Nigeria to always give fire trucks, ambulances and other emergency response vehicles the right of way during emergencies, stressing that every second can make the difference between life and death.

Adeyemi made the appeal while addressing journalists in Abuja, noting that delays caused by traffic obstruction often hinder emergency responders from reaching fire scenes, accident locations and other critical incidents on time. According to him, unrestricted access for emergency vehicles remains essential to saving lives and protecting property.

He explained that fire outbreaks can escalate rapidly within minutes, causing extensive damage when emergency personnel are unable to access affected locations promptly. He urged road users to cooperate with emergency responders by clearing the way immediately upon hearing sirens or noticing flashing emergency lights.

The Fire Service boss also emphasized that ambulances transporting critically ill patients require swift passage through traffic, as delays could jeopardize medical interventions and reduce the chances of survival for victims requiring urgent care.

Adeyemi noted that many countries have enacted strict regulations compelling motorists to yield to emergency vehicles, adding that Nigerians should embrace the same culture of civic responsibility. He said compliance with traffic rules during emergencies reflects a collective commitment to public safety and national development.

He further called on transport unions, commercial drivers and private motorists to support public awareness campaigns aimed at educating road users on the importance of prioritizing emergency vehicles. According to him, improved public cooperation would significantly enhance the effectiveness of emergency response operations nationwide.

The Controller-General also urged law enforcement agencies and traffic management authorities to intensify enforcement against motorists who deliberately obstruct emergency vehicles. He warned that such actions not only violate traffic regulations but also endanger lives and property by delaying critical interventions.

Adeyemi reaffirmed the Federal Fire Service’s commitment to safeguarding lives and infrastructure through prompt emergency response, fire prevention campaigns and public safety education. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, report emergencies promptly and always create a clear path for fire trucks and ambulances whenever they are responding to distress calls.
