The passing of Navy Captain Dr. Abubakar Umar Bakori (Rtd), Commander-General and Chairman of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) yesterday, marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Nigeria’s security history. Born on April 13, 1960, in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State, Captain Bakori dedicated more than four decades of his life to the service of his country, leaving behind a legacy defined by patriotism, discipline, courage, and unwavering commitment to national security. His death in 2026 has created a vacuum within Nigeria’s security community, but his contributions will continue to inspire generations of security practitioners and patriotic citizens.

Captain Bakori’s life journey reflected the ideals of hard work and selfless service. From his formative years at Government College, Kaduna, where he obtained his School Certificate in 1979, to his training at the prestigious Nigerian Naval College in 1982, he consistently demonstrated an uncommon determination to prepare himself for leadership responsibilities. His educational foundation laid the groundwork for a remarkable military and security career that would span several strategic sectors of national service.

A firm believer in continuous learning, Captain Bakori relentlessly pursued academic and professional excellence throughout his career. He earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Technology from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, in 2004, and later obtained a Master’s Degree in Security Studies from the Bangladesh University of Professionals in 2012. In recognition of his immense contributions to security and intelligence practice, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Prescott, United States, awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Security and Intelligence Studies in 2021.

His professional military training was equally impressive. From the Military Police Course in 1991 to the Above Water Warfare (Missile and Gunnery) Course in 1995, the Advanced Detective Course at the Police Staff College, Jos, in 1997, and the Command and Staff College Course in Jaji in 2000, Captain Bakori constantly sharpened his operational and leadership skills. His participation in the National Defence College Course in Bangladesh between 2011 and 2012 further broadened his strategic understanding of contemporary security challenges and international defence relations.

Throughout his distinguished naval career, Captain Bakori served in several critical appointments that underscored the confidence reposed in him by the Nigerian Navy. As Missile and Gunnery Officer aboard NNS DAMISA in Calabar, he played an important role in maritime operational readiness. His postings as Command Provost Marshal of the Western Naval Command, Deputy Provost Marshal at Naval Headquarters, and Command Operations Officer of the Eastern Naval Command demonstrated his versatility in military policing, operational planning, and strategic command responsibilities.

His leadership qualities also found expression in administrative and institutional development roles. He served as Executive Officer of NNS AMBE, Executive Officer of the Naval Dockyard in Lagos, Deputy Director of Training at the Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, and Staff Officer at Naval Headquarters. In each of these positions, he contributed significantly to personnel development, operational efficiency, and the strengthening of institutional structures within the Nigerian Armed Forces.

One of the most notable highlights of his military service was his appointment as Principal Staff Officer to the Honourable Minister of Defence. This strategic responsibility placed him at the intersection of military operations and national defence policy, allowing him to contribute directly to critical security decisions affecting the country. His professionalism, integrity, and broad experience made him a trusted adviser and an effective bridge between policy and operational implementation.

After retiring from active military service, Captain Bakori did not withdraw from national duty. Instead, he embarked on another mission of service by assuming leadership of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, one of the country’s largest community-based security organisations. As Commander-General and Chairman, he transformed the organisation into a stronger partner for government security agencies, traditional institutions, and local communities across the federation.

Under his leadership, the Vigilante Group of Nigeria deepened grassroots security engagement at a time when communities faced increasing threats from banditry, kidnapping, terrorism, and other forms of criminality. He championed collaboration rather than competition between vigilante operatives and conventional security agencies, advocating a community-centred approach to intelligence gathering and crime prevention. His efforts contributed significantly to strengthening local security structures and public confidence in community policing initiatives.

Captain Bakori also played notable roles in Nigeria’s political and security landscape. As a member of the Security Directorate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Security Coordinator for the party’s presidential campaign in Katsina State during the 2015 elections, he brought his wealth of experience to bear on political security management. His involvement reflected his enduring belief that national stability and democratic development must go hand in hand.

His professional accomplishments earned him numerous honours and recognitions. Among them were the Forces Service Star (FSS), Meritorious Service Star (MSS), Distinguished Service Star (DSS), Pass Staff College (PSC), Fellow of the National Defence College (FNDC), and Fellow of the International Institute of Professional Security (FNIIPS). These awards were not mere decorations; they were acknowledgements of a career distinguished by dedication, competence, and exceptional service.

Beyond the battlefield and administrative offices, Captain Bakori was also a scholar and author whose intellectual contributions enriched national discourse on security matters. His publications, including The Future of Our Nation, Low Intensity Conflict, Nigeria and Her Neighbours: A Case Study of Social and Security Implications, Islam and Terrorism: Reality and Discourse, and the Standing Operating Procedure for Vigilante Group of Nigeria, reflected his deep understanding of security challenges and his desire to provide practical solutions for policymakers and practitioners.

Those who worked with him often describe him as disciplined, approachable, strategic, and deeply committed to the welfare of his subordinates and the security of ordinary Nigerians. Whether in uniform, in government assignments, or in community security leadership, he carried himself with dignity and an unshakable sense of responsibility. He understood that effective security leadership required not only strength but also wisdom, patience, and collaboration.

As Nigeria mourns the loss of Navy Captain Dr. Abubakar Umar Bakori, the nation also celebrates a life well lived. His journey from a young student in Kaduna to a respected naval officer, security strategist, author, and Commander-General of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria stands as a testament to the power of service above self. Though he has departed this world, his legacy of patriotism, professionalism, community engagement, and national security leadership will remain a lasting source of inspiration for generations of Nigerians to come.
