Troops Foil Terrorist Attack on Military Base in Zamfara, Rescue Nine Kidnap Victims

By Samuel Ike, Abuja

Troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have successfully repelled an attempted terrorist attack on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) at Kasuwan Daji in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, inflicting heavy casualties on the attackers and rescuing nine abducted civilians.

The attack occurred at about 1:40 a.m. on August 2, 2026, when terrorists reportedly attempted to infiltrate the military facility under the cover of darkness. However, vigilant troops detected the movement of the assailants and responded with overwhelming firepower, forcing them to retreat in disarray.

Military sources said the terrorists were unable to breach the base due to the swift and coordinated response of the troops, who maintained a strong defensive position throughout the encounter.

Following the initial firefight, reinforcements were deployed to the area, and troops immediately launched a pursuit operation against the fleeing terrorists. During the chase, security forces discovered that the attackers had abducted several residents from nearby communities.

The sustained pressure mounted by the troops led to the successful rescue of nine kidnapped civilians, who were recovered unharmed and reunited with their families.

Despite the operational success, the military confirmed that one Army officer and one police officer lost their lives during the intense exchange of gunfire.

Two soldiers also sustained gunshot wounds during the confrontation. The injured personnel were promptly evacuated by air to a medical facility for advanced treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.

Troops have since secured the area and established dominance over the operational environment while exploitation and clearance operations continue to determine the full extent of the terrorists’ casualties and recover any abandoned weapons or equipment.

Military authorities described the failed attack as another major setback for terrorist elements operating in the North-West, noting that the incident highlights the growing effectiveness of ongoing counterterrorism operations across the region.

The command also dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that six security personnel were killed during the attack, clarifying that only one Army officer and one police officer lost their lives in the line of duty.

According to Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the outcome of the encounter demonstrates the increasing challenges faced by terrorist groups as military pressure intensifies across the North-West theatre of operations. The command noted that the sustained offensive is significantly degrading the operational capabilities, morale and freedom of movement of criminal elements.

The military reiterated its commitment to maintaining offensive operations against terrorist and bandit groups, protecting vulnerable communities, and restoring lasting peace and security throughout the North-West region. It also assured residents that troops would continue to pursue fleeing terrorists and deny them safe havens within the operational area.
