In a security environment often challenged by institutional pressures and inconsistent standards, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) John Onoja Attah has emerged as one of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps’ (NSCDC) most accomplished and disciplined officers. Renowned for his professionalism, intelligence-driven operations, and unwavering commitment to duty, Attah represents a new generation of security leaders combining academic excellence, operational competence, and ethical leadership.

Born on December 21, 1980, in Akpanya, Igalamela/Odolu Local Government Area of Kogi State, Attah’s journey to national prominence is rooted in hard work, determination, and a strong educational foundation. He attended RCM Primary School before proceeding to CMML Secondary School, Anyigba. His quest for knowledge led him to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology in 2006. Determined to deepen his expertise in security administration, he later obtained a Master’s Degree in Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice, equipping him with the academic and practical tools that have shaped his distinguished career.

Attah joined the NSCDC in 2010, a period when the Corps was expanding its operational scope beyond traditional civil protection functions to include intelligence gathering and strategic security operations. From the outset, he demonstrated exceptional analytical skills, discipline, and an aptitude for handling complex assignments. His dedication and results-oriented approach quickly earned him recognition within the Corps, paving the way for his steady rise through the ranks.

One of his most notable assignments was his service as Commander of the Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation Tactical Team, where he built a reputation for professionalism, discretion, and operational precision. His ability to coordinate sensitive investigations and execute intelligence-led operations made him a valuable asset to the Corps and strengthened its capacity to tackle emerging security challenges.

Today, Attah is best known for his leadership of the NSCDC Mining Marshals, a specialized unit established under Operation Hayakin Kogo to combat illegal mining and protect Nigeria’s vast mineral resources. The assignment is one of the most challenging within the nation’s security architecture, requiring effective coordination among security agencies, mining regulators, and local communities while confronting sophisticated criminal networks.

Under his leadership, the Mining Marshals have recorded remarkable achievements in the fight against illegal mining. The unit has arrested more than 600 suspects linked to illegal mining activities across the country, prosecuted over 551 cases, secured multiple convictions, and recovered mineral assets worth millions of naira. These accomplishments have significantly disrupted illicit mining operations and strengthened government efforts to sanitize the solid minerals sector.

His operational successes are underpinned by extensive professional training. Attah is a graduate of the Defence Intelligence Officers Course 17/21 at the Defence Intelligence College, Abuja, and has also received advanced security training at the West African Regional Training Centre in Accra, Ghana. These experiences have enhanced his expertise in intelligence gathering, strategic operations, and regional security management.

Security experts and colleagues describe him as a calm, disciplined, and highly focused officer who remains composed under pressure. His leadership style is characterized by meticulous planning, evidence-based decision-making, and strict adherence to professional standards. Those who have worked with him often highlight his ability to combine firmness with fairness, a quality that has earned him widespread respect both within and outside the Corps.

Attah’s outstanding contributions have attracted numerous awards and recognitions. In 2024, he was named Most Resourceful Operational Officer of the Year by National Crimewatch Magazine, African Security Hero of the Year by African Custodian Magazine, and Most Outstanding Security Officer of the Year by the Security and Emergency Management Awards (SAEMA). He was also honoured with the African Living Legend Award 2024 by Elation Magazine Ghana.

The accolades continued in 2025 when The Pride Newspaper recognized him as the Outstanding Operational Security Personality of the Year, while Conti News Magazine presented him with the Guardian Award. The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) also honoured him with the Outstanding Mining Security Leadership Award, acknowledging his pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s solid mineral resources.

Much of the success recorded by the Mining Marshals aligns with the broader reform agenda of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi. Under his leadership, the Corps has strengthened specialized operational units and enhanced professionalism across its formations. Attah has played a significant role in translating these reforms into measurable operational outcomes.

His close collaboration with the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has further improved coordination between security and regulatory agencies, helping to address longstanding challenges associated with illegal mining and mineral theft. The partnership has contributed to greater enforcement efficiency and improved protection of Nigeria’s mineral assets.

Beyond his professional achievements, Attah is widely regarded as a humble and dedicated family man. Those who know him describe him as a leader who prefers action to publicity and results to rhetoric. Despite his growing profile within the security community, he remains approachable, disciplined, and focused on service.
