Operation Whirl Stroke Troops Foil Terrorist Attack, Neutralise Two Suspects in Benue Market Raid

Troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), in collaboration with operatives of the Benue State Civil Protection Guard, have successfully foiled a terrorist attack at the Tor Donga Yam Market in Benue State, neutralising two suspected terrorists and recovering arms and ammunition.

The operation was carried out on Sunday, June 28, 2026, following a distress call received by troops who were conducting fighting and confidence-building patrols within the area.

Upon arrival at the market, the security operatives engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle. During the encounter, two suspected terrorists identified as Dantaraba and Golozo were neutralised, while others fled the scene.

A subsequent search of the area led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, one damaged pistol, one pistol magazine, six rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, nine rounds of 9mm pistol ammunition, one ATM card, one Moniepoint card, and several other items believed to belong to the suspects.

The successful operation prevented what could have been a major attack on traders and residents, ensuring that commercial activities at the Tor Donga Yam Market continued without disruption.

The Force Commander of Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism, courage, and swift response, noting that their timely intervention averted potential loss of lives and significant disruption of economic activities.

He also praised the operatives of the Benue State Civil Protection Guard for their collaboration and commitment to ongoing efforts aimed at eliminating criminal elements from the state.

Major General Gara further expressed appreciation to members of the public for providing timely and credible intelligence that contributed to the success of the operation. He urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with useful information, stressing that effective security remains a collective responsibility.

Operation WHIRL STROKE reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining ongoing efforts to protect lives and property, while maintaining pressure on criminal and terrorist elements threatening peace and stability in Benue State and other areas within its area of responsibility.
