SGF Condemns Killing of Benue MACBAN Chairman, Calls for Swift Justice

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, has strongly condemned the killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Risku Mohammed, and his associate, describing the incident as a grave threat to peace and stability in the state.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Yomi Odunuga, the SGF called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of all those involved in the killings.

Akume described the attack as a direct assault on the peace, reconciliation, and mutual trust that communities across Benue State have worked diligently to rebuild over the years.

He expressed concern that the killings occurred at a time when the state was witnessing notable improvements in security and peaceful coexistence among its diverse ethnic and religious groups.

According to him, criminal elements must not be allowed to undermine the gains achieved through dialogue, understanding, and collective sacrifice.

The SGF urged residents of the state to resist attempts by individuals or groups seeking to incite violence, hatred, and reprisals, stressing that no one should take the law into their own hands.

He emphasized that sustainable development and economic prosperity can only flourish in an atmosphere of peace, tolerance, and mutual respect.

Akume also extended his condolences to the family of the late MACBAN chairman, the association’s leadership and members, and all those affected by the tragic incident.

He directed the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other security agencies to conduct a thorough, transparent, and comprehensive investigation into the killings.

According to the SGF, every effort must be made to identify, apprehend, and prosecute all individuals connected to the crime.

Akume recalled that following the killings in Yelwata, he had demanded the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators, noting that suspects in that case had since been apprehended and were currently facing trial.

He said security agencies must demonstrate the same level of commitment and determination in ensuring justice for the slain MACBAN chairman and his associate.

“The lives of every Nigerian are sacred. Those who believe they can undermine peace through violence and murder must understand that there will be no hiding place for them.

“Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done,” he stated.

The SGF further reaffirmed the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to combating insecurity across the country, noting that the Federal Government has continued to provide security and intelligence agencies with the resources, support, and strategic direction needed to tackle criminal activities effectively.

He urged the people of Benue State to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations, and continue supporting efforts aimed at strengthening peace, security, and harmonious coexistence across the state.
