The Federal Government has announced plans to establish fire stations within universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education across the country as part of efforts to strengthen emergency response and enhance safety on campuses.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring rapid intervention during fire outbreaks and other emergencies, thereby reducing loss of lives, property, and critical infrastructure within tertiary institutions. It also seeks to address recurring incidents of delayed response caused by the distance of existing fire services from campuses.
According to government officials, the proposed campus fire stations will be equipped with modern firefighting facilities and staffed by trained personnel to guarantee round-the-clock readiness. The programme will also include fire safety education and regular drills for students and staff to promote a culture of prevention and preparedness.
The Federal Government noted that the project aligns with its broader commitment to safeguarding educational environments and protecting public assets. When fully implemented, the initiative is expected to significantly improve campus safety, reassure students and parents, and strengthen disaster management in the nation’s tertiary institutions.
