NSCDC Special Mining Marshals Commander, ACC John Onoja Attah, Bags People’s Security Monitor 2025 Public Service Distinction Award, Says Community Engagement Is Crucial to Sustainable Mining

The Commander of the Special Mining Marshals of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Assistant Commissioner of Corps (ACC) John Onoja Attah, has been honoured with the prestigious People’s Security Monitor 2025 Public Service Distinction Award. The meritorious award was presented to him yesterday in his office by Isiaka Mustapha, Chief Operating Officer/Editor-in-Chief of People’s Security Monitor, in recognition of his outstanding commitment to public service and sustainable mining development in Nigeria.

In a brief acceptance speech, ACC Attah emphasized the importance of community involvement in achieving lasting progress in the mining industry. “Engaging communities is not optional; it is central to ensuring that mining activities are safe, responsible, and beneficial to all stakeholders,” he said. He noted that without active collaboration with local populations, even the most advanced mining policies could fail to deliver meaningful impact.

The award committee praised ACC Attah for his leadership in promoting security and safety standards within mining operations across the country. Under his command, the Special Mining Marshals have strengthened regulatory compliance, reduced illegal mining activities, and fostered trust between miners and local communities. These efforts, according to the committee, have set a benchmark for public service excellence in Nigeria.

ACC Attah also highlighted that sustainable mining development goes beyond economic gains. “We must ensure environmental protection, fair labor practices, and community empowerment,” he explained. His approach integrates security, social responsibility, and transparency to create an ecosystem where mining benefits are shared equitably while minimizing adverse impacts.

Colleagues and industry stakeholders lauded the award as a well-deserved recognition of ACC Attah’s dedication. Many noted that his initiatives have not only enhanced public safety in mining areas but also improved the livelihood of communities dependent on mining activities. His work is being seen as a model for other security and regulatory agencies nationwide.

The Public Service Distinction Award by People’s Security Monitor is one of the most respected accolades in the country, celebrating individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, integrity, and commitment to the public good. ACC John Onoja Attah’s achievement highlights the critical intersection of security, community engagement, and sustainable resource management in Nigeria’s growing mining sector.
