Ogun Customs hands over seized cannabis sativa, guns, to NDLEA, police

The Ogun I Area Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Comptroller Godwin Otunla, has handed over intercepted cannabis sativa, dane gun, live cartridges among others to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, and the Nigerian Police Force on Wednesday.

The seized items totaled at a duty paid value of N344m, include 5 units of single barrel dane gun, 1,433 rounds of live cartridges, 18 pieces of 16×4.8cm and 30 pieces of 12×3.8cm best fireworks indoor, 1,037 parcels of coconut-size cannabis sativa and 13,125 liters of petrol.

Comptroller Otunla, speaking during a press briefing held at the command’s headquarter in Idiroko, said the items were intercepted between April 24, to June 18, 2025 in the Lusada/Ado-Odo axis of the state, Abule Kazeem/Igbo-Ora road, Abeokuta, Imeko, Idiroko/Owode, Ipokia axis among others.

He noted that the achievement was made possible through intensified surveillance, strategic intelligence, collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders in the state.

The Comptroller said, “ The total Duty Paid Value (DPV) of these seizures stands at N344,853,244 – a clear testament to our zero-tolerance stance against smuggling and economic sabotage.

“Today’s briefing highlights our progress and key achievements in border security and anti-smuggling efforts through strategic enforcement and collaboration with relevant security agencies. It is also an opportunity to reaffirm the NCS’s strong commitment to safeguarding national security, promoting economic stability, and protecting the health of citizens.

“ For emphasis, the seizures of Cannabis Sativa and Arms and Ammunition are particularly worrisome, given their far-reaching impact on our youth, public health, and national security.

Comptroller Otunla stated that the command had also generated a revenue of N42.3m in May 2025, stressing that the feat reflects deliberate efforts to block revenue leakages, ensure compliance, and foster legitimate trade across our borders.

“ Prior to my assumption of duty in April 2025, the sum of N10,621,250 was generated as revenue for the Command. However, through renewed commitment and strategic realignment, the figure was increased significantly to N42,279,240.00 by ending of May 2025.

“This improvement reflects the deliberate efforts to block revenue leakages, ensure compliance, and foster legitimate trade across our borders.

“ I also extend sincere commendation to the gallant officers and men of Ogun I Area Command whose relentless efforts, despite daunting challenges, have made these successes possible. Their dedication is not only commendable but patriotic” Otunla added.

However, he cautioned smugglers and those who assist them to avoid the state, restating the command’s resolve to be vigilant, alert, and prepared to confront any danger to the nation’s economic and security interests.
