The Commander of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant Attah John Onoja, has announced intensified nationwide enforcement operations against illegal mining, warning operators to comply fully with existing mining laws or face appropriate sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Onoja said the operations would cover mining locations across the country as the Corps steps up efforts to curb unauthorised mineral exploitation, protect Nigeria\u2019s natural resources and enforce compliance with licensing, operational and safety regulations.The latest enforcement exercise took place in Nasarawa State, where the Mining Marshals worked alongside the Federal Mines Officer and other relevant mining regulatory officials to inspect mining activities and ensure adherence to established laws and operational requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The exercise forms part of the broader efforts of the NSCDC, under the leadership of Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to support the Federal Government\u2019s drive to sanitise the solid minerals sector and implement the policy objectives of the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake.Onoja disclosed that the nationwide enforcement campaign would continue across different mining locations without a predetermined sequence, indicating that operators should not assume that any mining area would be exempt from inspection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stressed that individuals, companies and other entities involved in mineral exploration and exploitation must operate strictly within the provisions of the law. According to him, the Mining Marshals would not tolerate activities that undermine regulatory authority or encourage the illegal extraction of the country\u2019s mineral resources.The commander specifically warned operators against engaging in mining activities without valid licences and the necessary regulatory approvals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
He maintained that compliance with licensing conditions and other statutory requirements was not optional but a fundamental obligation for every legitimate mining operator.He further emphasised that regular inspections and continuous monitoring of mining sites were essential to identifying violations, enforcing safety standards and preventing activities capable of endangering lives and property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Onoja noted that failure to observe prescribed mining safety regulations could lead to avoidable deaths, mine collapses and other serious accidents. Such incidents, he observed, frequently expose miners, employees and members of host communities to grave risks.The Mining Marshals consequently urged mining companies, operators and other stakeholders to conduct their businesses responsibly, obtain the required approvals and cooperate with relevant regulatory authorities. They warned that violations of applicable laws would attract appropriate enforcement measures.Beyond tackling illegal mining, the intensified operations are expected to strengthen accountability, reduce revenue losses associated with unauthorised mineral exploitation and improve confidence in Nigeria\u2019s solid minerals industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NSCDC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the nation’s mineral resources and ensuring that mining activities are conducted within the framework of the law, stressing that the nationwide campaign would remain a central part of its efforts to promote responsible mining, public safety and sustainable development.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
