The Nigerian Navy has intensified its crackdown on crude oil theft, illegal refining, pipeline vandalism and maritime crime under Operation DELTA SENTINEL, recovering more than 2.25 million litres of petroleum products and rescuing 24 kidnapped persons between July and September 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The latest operational gains build on successes recorded in the first half of the year, as the Navy sustained intelligence driven operations to dismantle criminal networks, protect critical oil and gas infrastructure and safeguard legitimate economic activities across the country’s maritime and oil producing areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the third quarter, the Navy recovered 1,555,983 litres of suspected stolen crude oil, 595,470 litres of Automotive Gas Oil, 85,690 litres of Premium Motor Spirit and 15,774 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene. The Service also arrested more than 70 suspects, seized four vessels and five boats, and destroyed 14 other boats linked to crude oil theft and related criminal activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The operations further led to the deactivation of more than 88 illegal refining sites, 363 dugout pits, 20 reservoirs and 80 storage tanks and reservoirs. Eight refining ovens were destroyed, while eight outboard engines, four firearms, more than 100 rounds of ammunition and seven vehicles and trucks were recovered from suspected criminal elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The achievements reinforce the Navy’s sustained campaign against the infrastructure and logistics supporting crude oil theft, illegal refining, storage and transportation of illicit petroleum products. By targeting these interconnected activities, the Service aims to restrict the operational capacity of criminal networks and prevent them from exploiting Nigeria’s oil and gas resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The third quarter results also consolidate the operational gains recorded since the launch of Operation DELTA SENTINEL in January 2026. In the first quarter, the Navy conducted more than 183 operations, recovered over 531,500 litres of illegally refined petroleum products and arrested 18 suspects. In the second quarter, more than 580 intelligence driven operations resulted in the recovery of over 4.698 million litres of suspected stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products, the arrest of more than 91 suspects and the dismantling of over 48 illegal refining sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cumulatively, since the operation commenced in January, the Navy has disrupted more than 241 illegal refining networks and sites, recovered over 7.482 million litres of suspected stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products, and arrested more than 230 suspects. These figures highlight the connection between maritime security, energy security and Nigeria’s economic stability, particularly in protecting oil production, transportation and export infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Navy’s operational efforts come amid improved crude oil export earnings. Provisional Balance of Payments statistics released by the Central Bank of Nigeria indicate that the country’s crude oil export earnings increased from $8.11 billion in the first quarter of 2026 to $9.39 billion in the second quarter, representing a rise of 15.78 per cent. Although the improvement reflects the combined efforts of the Federal Government, industry operators, regulators, security agencies, host communities and other stakeholders, sustained efforts to curb oil theft and protect critical infrastructure have helped create a more secure environment for legitimate production and evacuation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beyond arrests and seizures, the Nigerian Navy has stressed the importance of successful prosecutions in ensuring that offenders face appropriate legal consequences. The recent conviction of nine crude oil thieves by the Federal High Court sitting in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, was cited as an example of the desired outcome of investigations and arrests under Operation DELTA SENTINEL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Service has therefore called for faster investigations and diligent prosecution of suspects arrested for crude oil theft, illegal refining and other acts of economic sabotage. According to the Navy, timely prosecution and appropriate judicial penalties are essential to strengthening deterrence and preventing criminal networks from resuming their activities after temporary operational disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the strategic direction of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the Nigerian Navy said it would sustain intelligence driven operations to dismantle criminal networks and protect critical national assets and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Service also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with host communities and other relevant stakeholders, noting that public cooperation and timely intelligence remain essential to denying criminal elements the opportunity to engage in oil theft, illegal refining and other activities that undermine national economic interests.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
