The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have intensified enforcement operations across the country as part of renewed efforts to sanitise Nigeria\u2019s solid minerals sector and strengthen compliance with mining laws and regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The specialised enforcement unit disclosed that its operational teams, particularly in the South-West region, have recorded significant successes in ensuring that mining activities conform to extant laws and regulatory requirements. The development reflects the Federal Government\u2019s determination to eradicate illegal mining and safeguard the nation\u2019s mineral resources. Established as a strategic enforcement arm, the Mining Marshals were created to support ongoing reforms in the solid minerals sector and curb illegal mining activities nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) John Onoja Attah, warned mining operators against violating regulatory provisions, stressing that ignorance of the law would not exempt offenders from prosecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIgnorance of the law is never an excuse. Every operator must ensure that mining activities are carried out within the framework of the law. Those who choose to operate outside the regulatory system will face the full weight of the law,\u201d Onoja stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He explained that the intensified enforcement campaign is aimed not only at combating illegal mining but also at protecting legitimate investors, boosting government revenue and restoring credibility to a sector that has long been challenged by regulatory breaches and economic sabotage. According to him, lawful, safe and sustainable mining practices remain essential to unlocking the vast economic potential of Nigeria\u2019s solid minerals industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ongoing operations align with the reform agenda of the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, which seeks to reposition the mining sector as a key driver of economic diversification and national growth. The ministry has consistently emphasised the need for strict regulatory compliance, investor protection and the elimination of illegal mining activities to enhance confidence in the industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Stakeholders believe the renewed enforcement drive also reflects the strategic leadership of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi, mni, OFR, whose administration has prioritised the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure. Under his leadership, the Corps has strengthened institutional support for the Mining Marshals, positioning the unit as a vital force in the fight against illegal resource exploitation and revenue leakages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The NSCDC reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant regulatory agencies and stakeholders to ensure that Nigeria\u2019s mineral resources are exploited responsibly and in accordance with the law.
