Innocent Azubuike and His Fellow Patriots

By Isiaka Mustapha, Editor-in-Chief, People’s Security Monitor

The measure of a nation’s gratitude is not found in speeches delivered on national holidays or in the ceremonial laying of wreaths before television cameras. It is found in how that nation treats the men and women who sacrificed their youth, health and comfort in its defence. By that standard, Nigeria stands accused of a profound moral failure. The plight of retired Lt. Col. Innocent Azubuike and countless other military veterans raises troubling questions about whether the country truly values those who spent decades safeguarding its territorial integrity.

For many retired military officers, retirement has become less a reward for service than a sentence of uncertainty. After years spent defending the nation in difficult and often dangerous conditions, many veterans face delayed benefits, inadequate pensions and mounting economic hardship. The contrast between their sacrifices and their present circumstances is difficult to reconcile with the ideals of a grateful nation.

Military personnel are expected to place national interest above personal comfort. They endure prolonged separations from their families, operate in hostile environments and accept risks that most citizens will never encounter. Yet, after retirement, many find themselves struggling to access benefits that should have been guaranteed as a matter of honour and law. Such treatment diminishes the value of service and sends a troubling message to those currently in uniform.

Nigeria’s economic challenges have intensified the suffering of retirees. Inflation has significantly eroded purchasing power in recent years, increasing the cost of food, housing, transportation and healthcare. For retirees living on fixed incomes, every delay in receiving legitimate entitlements translates into deeper hardship. What may appear as administrative inefficiency on paper often becomes a matter of survival in reality.

The administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must confront this issue with urgency and seriousness. While the government has repeatedly emphasized economic reforms and fiscal discipline, these objectives cannot come at the expense of citizens who have already paid an extraordinary price in service to the nation. No reform agenda can be considered successful if it leaves veterans feeling abandoned and forgotten.

The tragedy lies not only in the financial difficulties faced by retirees but also in the symbolism of their neglect. A nation that fails to honour those who defended it risks weakening the very values of patriotism, sacrifice and loyalty that sustain national cohesion. Young officers observing the experiences of retired personnel cannot help but wonder whether their own sacrifices will one day be similarly disregarded.

Equally concerning is the perception that some individuals with far less experience, responsibility or sacrifice continue to enjoy substantial rewards and privileges, while senior retired officers struggle to obtain benefits they have earned. Such disparities create a sense of injustice that undermines confidence in public institutions and fuels resentment among those who once served with distinction.

The Ministry of Defence cannot escape scrutiny in this matter. As the institution responsible for policies affecting military personnel and veterans, it bears a significant responsibility to ensure that retired officers receive fair and timely treatment. Administrative delays, bureaucratic obstacles and policy failures should never become excuses for denying veterans their rights.

Particular attention must also be directed toward Defence Minister retired General Christopher Musa and the broader defence establishment. More importantly, senior military leaders who understand the realities of military service should be among the strongest advocates for retirees. Their experience gives them a unique appreciation of the sacrifices involved and the consequences of neglecting those who have served.

The silence that often surrounds veterans’ grievances is itself part of the problem. Many retired officers are reluctant to publicly challenge institutions they once served faithfully. Their discipline and respect for authority should not be mistaken for acceptance of injustice. A responsible government should address legitimate concerns before frustration turns into public outrage.

Nigeria cannot afford a situation in which retired military personnel are compelled to stage desperate demonstrations simply to secure benefits they have already earned. The government should not wait until elderly veterans begin collapsing from hardship or dying in frustration while seeking justice. Such a scenario would represent a national disgrace and a devastating indictment of the country’s priorities.

History offers countless examples of nations that strengthened their military institutions by treating veterans with dignity and respect. Conversely, societies that neglected former service members often paid a price in declining morale and weakened trust. The treatment of retirees is not merely a welfare issue; it is a strategic issue with implications for national security and military effectiveness.

The Tinubu administration has repeatedly spoken about renewing hope. For retired officers struggling to secure their entitlements, hope must be demonstrated through action rather than rhetoric. Prompt payment of benefits, transparent pension administration and meaningful engagement with veterans would provide far more reassurance than official statements.

The case of Lt. Col. Innocent Azubuike and his fellow retirees symbolizes a broader challenge confronting Nigeria. Their experiences highlight the gap between national promises and national performance. The country owes these men more than gratitude expressed in words; it owes them justice expressed through concrete action.

A nation that celebrates military heroism while neglecting military retirees risks appearing selective in its patriotism. Genuine patriotism requires more than honouring service during periods of active duty. It requires standing by veterans long after the applause has faded and the uniforms have been folded away.

The federal government must act decisively to address the concerns of retired military personnel. Delayed benefits, inadequate welfare provisions and bureaucratic indifference are not merely administrative shortcomings; they are failures of national responsibility. Nigeria’s veterans fulfilled their obligations to the country. The country must now fulfil its obligations to them. Anything less would represent a betrayal not only of Lt. Col. Innocent Azubuike and his fellow patriots, but of the principles of honour, sacrifice and national gratitude itself.

Isiaka Mustapha, Editor-in-Chief, People’s Security Monitor, writes from Abuja.
pressgallery2013@gmail.com
08055001816

A Nation’s Betrayal: The Untold Story of Lt.
