For decades, Nigeria’s economic destiny revolved almost entirely around crude oil. National budgets rose and fell with fluctuations in global oil prices, while other strategic sectors remained largely underdeveloped. Today, however, a new economic reality is emerging. The future of global wealth creation is increasingly being shaped by critical minerals such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, copper, tin and rare earth elements. These resources power electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, telecommunications infrastructure and advanced manufacturing. As the world transitions towards cleaner technologies, mineral-rich nations are becoming the new centres of economic competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nigeria is fortunate to possess enormous deposits of these strategic minerals. From lithium in Nasarawa, Kogi and Kaduna States to gold in Zamfara, Kebbi and Niger States, the country sits on vast underground wealth capable of generating billions of naira in revenue, attracting foreign investment, creating jobs and reducing dependence on oil. Yet these opportunities can only be realised if the nation’s mineral resources are properly protected from illegal exploitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is precisely why the creation of the Mining Marshals remains one of the most consequential economic security decisions taken by the Federal Government in recent years. While many Nigerians still view the Mining Marshals as merely another security outfit, their role extends far beyond enforcement. They are protectors of national wealth, guardians of investor confidence and defenders of Nigeria’s economic future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For years, illegal mining operated almost unchecked in many parts of the country. Criminal syndicates, foreign collaborators and local profiteers exploited mineral resources without licences, paid no royalties to government and often left behind environmental devastation. The result was a massive loss of revenue that should have been invested in infrastructure, healthcare, education and economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The deployment of the Mining Marshals has significantly altered that narrative. Their operations have sent a clear message that the era of unrestricted mineral theft is gradually coming to an end. Through intelligence gathering, site inspections, arrests and prosecutions, the unit has strengthened government authority across the mining sector and restored confidence among legitimate operators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In my view, one of the greatest achievements of the Mining Marshals is the protection of lawful investors. No serious investor will commit substantial resources to a sector where criminal elements can invade licensed sites and operate without consequences. By recovering illegally occupied mining locations and ensuring compliance with mining regulations, the Marshals have helped create a more predictable investment climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The importance of this intervention cannot be overstated. Around the world, countries are aggressively competing for a share of the emerging critical minerals market. The global demand for lithium alone has increased dramatically due to the expansion of electric vehicle production and battery manufacturing. Nations that secure and regulate their mineral sectors effectively stand to reap enormous economic rewards in the coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is therefore impossible to discuss the success of the Mining Marshals without acknowledging the remarkable leadership of Assistant Commandant of Corps John Attah Onoja. Under his command, the unit has evolved into a disciplined and highly visible enforcement structure. The numerous arrests, recovery of mining sites and disruption of illegal operations recorded by the Marshals reflect strategic leadership and operational effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ACC Onoja’s contribution deserves recognition because he has remained focused despite intense resistance from vested interests whose illegal activities have been disrupted. The success of any enforcement agency is often measured by the discomfort it causes criminal networks, and by that standard, the Mining Marshals have proven their effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Equal commendation must go to the Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi. His decision to fully support the operationalisation and expansion of the Mining Marshals demonstrates visionary leadership. Professor Audi understood early that the protection of mineral resources is not merely a regulatory responsibility but a national security imperative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Commandant-General deserves credit for providing the institutional framework, manpower and operational support that have enabled the Marshals to function effectively. Through his leadership, the NSCDC has reinforced its reputation as a critical stakeholder in the protection of Nigeria’s critical national assets and infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Likewise, the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Dele Alake, deserves substantial praise for his determination to sanitise the sector. Since assuming office, he has consistently emphasised enforcement, transparency, investment attraction and value addition. His reforms have elevated solid minerals from a neglected sector to a central component of Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What many Nigerians may not fully appreciate is that solid minerals possess the potential to become one of the country’s most important sources of non-oil revenue. Beyond royalties and taxes, the sector can stimulate industrialisation, create manufacturing opportunities, generate employment, increase exports and strengthen foreign exchange earnings. Countries such as Australia, Canada and South Africa have demonstrated how effective mineral governance can drive national prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The economic significance of the Mining Marshals therefore extends beyond the arrest of illegal miners. Every mining site secured, every illegal operator removed and every lawful investor protected contributes directly to national development. Their work strengthens government revenue, promotes investor confidence and safeguards strategic resources needed for future economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As Nigeria searches for sustainable pathways to economic prosperity, the solid minerals sector offers one of the most promising opportunities available. However, mineral wealth alone does not guarantee development. What matters is the ability to secure, regulate and utilise those resources effectively. In that regard, the Mining Marshals have become indispensable to Nigeria’s development agenda. Their mission is not merely about enforcement; it is about protecting the foundations of a future economy that may one day rival, and perhaps surpass, the historical significance of oil. For that reason, the Mining Marshals, headed by ACC John Attah Onoja, and his two principals, Professor Ahmed Abubakar Audi and Dr Dele Alake deserve the support of every Nigerian committed to economic growth, national security and sustainable development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
