The announcement by the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), that the minimum monthly salary of Nigerian soldiers has been increased from \u20a649,000 to \u20a6100,000 was expected to be received as a landmark achievement in military welfare. Instead, it has triggered widespread criticism and renewed concerns about the welfare of troops risking their lives daily in defence of the nation. While the increase may appear significant on paper, many Nigerians believe it exposes a worrying disconnect between military leadership and the harsh economic realities confronting ordinary soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fundamental issue is not the percentage increase but the actual value of \u20a6100,000 in today’s economy. A salary may double or even triple, but if inflation continues to erode purchasing power, the increase becomes largely symbolic. What matters is not how much money is paid, but what that money can buy. For many Nigerians, \u20a6100,000 can no longer guarantee a decent standard of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
General Musa’s position becomes even more difficult to defend when viewed against the backdrop of Nigeria’s worsening cost-of-living crisis. Food prices have risen sharply in recent years. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Nigeria’s inflation rate stood at approximately 15.91 per cent in June 2026. While lower than previous peaks, inflation continues to diminish the purchasing power of workers across the country. Food inflation remains a major challenge, with basic household commodities consuming a growing share of family incomes. For a soldier earning \u20a6100,000 monthly, these economic pressures are impossible to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reality is that most soldiers are not serving themselves alone. They are husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, and breadwinners responsible for the welfare of their families. They must pay rent, feed their households, settle medical bills, provide education for their children, and respond to emergencies. The question therefore arises: can \u20a6100,000 adequately support a soldier and his family in modern-day Nigeria?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For many military families, the answer is clearly no. In major cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, and Enugu, accommodation alone can consume a substantial portion of that amount. Transportation expenses continue to rise. The cost of food has become a major burden. By the time a soldier addresses these basic necessities, very little may remain for savings or unforeseen challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet these are the same men and women expected to defend Nigeria against some of the most dangerous security threats in Africa. Across the North-East, troops confront Boko Haram insurgents and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters. In the North-West, they battle heavily armed bandits responsible for mass killings and kidnappings. In the North-Central, they respond to violent communal conflicts, while in other regions they confront separatist violence, oil theft, and organised criminal networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Military service is unlike most professions. Soldiers willingly accept assignments that place them in direct danger. They spend months away from their families, endure difficult living conditions, and operate under constant threat of injury or death. Some return with permanent disabilities. Others never return at all. Such sacrifices deserve remuneration that reflects the extraordinary nature of their responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What makes the situation more troubling is that General Musa himself has repeatedly acknowledged that Nigeria’s military remains underfunded. If military funding is inadequate, then troop welfare should be among the first areas requiring urgent attention. Instead of celebrating \u20a6100,000 as a major breakthrough, many expected stronger advocacy for a compensation structure that genuinely reflects current economic realities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The concern is not merely about money. It is about morale. Around the world, military experts recognise that welfare directly affects operational effectiveness. Soldiers who feel valued and adequately compensated are more likely to remain motivated, disciplined, and committed to their duties. Conversely, poor welfare can undermine morale and weaken confidence within the ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The armed forces are currently carrying an enormous burden. Thousands of troops are deployed across various operations nationwide. They are expected to secure communities, protect critical infrastructure, combat terrorism, prevent kidnapping, and preserve national stability. Asking them to shoulder these responsibilities while earning a salary many Nigerians consider inadequate risks sending the wrong message about how the nation values their sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The timing of the announcement has also contributed to public criticism. Nigerians are enduring one of the most challenging economic periods in recent history. Households are struggling to cope with rising prices and declining purchasing power. In such an environment, many citizens expected a more ambitious approach to military welfare rather than a figure that barely reflects prevailing economic conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Supporters of the salary increase argue that moving from \u20a649,000 to \u20a6100,000 represents more than a 100 per cent increase. Statistically, that is correct. However, percentages do not tell the whole story. The true measure of welfare is whether soldiers can live with dignity, support their families, and perform their duties without constant financial anxiety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A recruit contemplating military service today must weigh enormous risks against limited financial rewards. He knows he may be deployed to volatile regions, separated from his family for extended periods, and exposed to life-threatening situations. It is reasonable to ask whether \u20a6100,000 is sufficient compensation for such a demanding and dangerous profession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
General Christopher Musa, as the nation’s Defence Minister and one of the most influential voices within the security establishment, should be at the forefront of demanding better conditions for military personnel. Rather than presenting \u20a6100,000 as evidence of significant progress, many believe he should be leading the campaign for comprehensive welfare reforms that include improved salaries, housing, healthcare, insurance, education support, and enhanced retirement benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ultimately, the controversy surrounding the \u20a6100,000 soldier reflects a deeper military welfare crisis. The issue is not whether the salary is higher than before. The issue is whether it reflects the value of those entrusted with defending Nigeria. Judged against the dangers soldiers face, the sacrifices they make, and the economic realities of contemporary Nigeria, many citizens believe the answer is no. A nation that expects its soldiers to make the ultimate sacrifice must be prepared to offer compensation that guarantees dignity, security, and a reasonable standard of living for them and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
