Troops of the Joint Task Force in Kano State have thwarted a bandit attack and recovered 147 rustled livestock, including 97 cattle and 50 sheep, during a successful operation along the Kano\u2013Katsina border.
The operation was carried out on July 15, 2026, following credible intelligence indicating that armed bandits were moving a large number of rustled animals through the Yankamaye and Rimaye axis near the boundary between Kano and Katsina states. Acting swiftly on the information, troops stationed at Forward Operating Bases (FOBs), supported by personnel from a Response Area, deployed to strategic crossing points frequently used by criminal elements.
Upon sighting the troops, the bandits attempted to escape with the stolen livestock, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire. The troops, however, gained the upper hand, forcing the criminals to abandon the animals and flee towards neighbouring Katsina State.
During the operation, two suspected terrorists were arrested, while one motorcycle believed to have been used by the bandits was recovered. Troops also successfully retrieved 97 cattle and 50 sheep, all of which have since been returned to their rightful owners.
The operation, however, recorded a tragic incident as a local vigilante, Mallam Yusuf Adamu, 47, of Yanchibi Village, lost his life after being caught in the crossfire during the confrontation.
The Nigerian Army expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and the Yanchibi community, describing the loss as unfortunate and deeply regrettable.
Military authorities disclosed that troops have continued to dominate and comb the general area in pursuit of the fleeing bandits, with efforts ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal group.
Commending the troops for their courage and professionalism, the Commander of 3 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General Saka Jimoh, praised their vigilance, combat readiness, and determination in confronting criminal elements.
He charged the troops to sustain the ongoing offensive operations until all bandits and other criminal elements operating within the area are decisively neutralised.
Brigadier General Jimoh also appreciated residents for their continued support and cooperation with security agencies, noting that timely and credible intelligence from members of the public remains crucial to the success of ongoing efforts to combat banditry and other security threats.
