The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has dismissed reports alleging that inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kuje, Abuja, were robbed of personal valuables worth more than \u20a6120 million during a recent search operation within the facility.
In a statement issued by the Service, the NCoS described the allegation as false, misleading and inconsistent with established custodial procedures. The Service maintained that no such incident occurred and urged the public to disregard the claims circulating on online platforms.
According to the statement, the exercise carried out at the Kuje facility was a routine security search aimed at maintaining order, discipline and the overall security of the custodial centre. Officials noted that all items recovered during the operation were properly processed and documented in accordance with standard operating procedures.
The Service explained that inmates are prohibited from keeping unauthorised items or large sums of money while in custody. It added that all personal belongings and valuables declared by inmates upon admission are officially recorded and safely stored until their lawful release.
NCoS further stated that available records at the custodial centre do not show that the items allegedly stolen were declared by any inmate at the time of admission. The Service also noted that no such valuables were discovered or documented during the security search.
It stressed that the items mentioned in the reports fall under prohibited contraband within correctional facilities and are not permitted in the possession of inmates. The Service added that any unauthorised introduction or possession of such items would constitute a violation of custodial regulations.
The correctional authorities also disclosed that, as of the time of issuing the statement, no inmate had lodged any formal or informal complaint regarding the alleged loss of valuables. The Service said no report of theft had been received through any of its official complaint channels.
Reaffirming that the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje, remains peaceful and secure, the Nigerian Correctional Service called on journalists and members of the public to verify information through official channels before publication.
