Much of the outrage appears exaggerated, misplaced, and lacking in proper understanding of the responsibilities and privileges attached to high public office.

To begin with, every high ranking public servant deserves proper protocol and security when visiting their hometown. This is standard for a Controller General. The office he occupies is not a casual position but one of national significance. Movement with official security and convoy is not a matter of personal indulgence but a requirement of the office. So what is the noise about?

Those feigning outrage must be reminded that such protocol arrangements are neither new nor exclusive to the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service. Across Nigeria, senior government officials move with adequate security for obvious reasons. It is about safety, coordination, and preserving the integrity of the office they represent.

It is therefore surprising that what should ordinarily be seen as routine has been turned into a subject of unnecessary controversy. Critics have chosen to amplify optics while ignoring the realities of public service at that level. This selective indignation raises questions about motive and fairness.

Even more baffling is the attempt to link the visit to operational matters such as the availability of firefighting equipment. What exactly has the issue of extinguishers got to do with a festive visit by the Controller General to his hometown? These are entirely separate matters that should not be deliberately mixed to mislead the public.

Governance does not grind to a halt because a public official travels for a holiday, especially one as widely observed as Easter. The Federal Fire Service remains an institution with structures, personnel, and operational systems that continue to function regardless of the physical location of its head at any given time.

Beyond the controversy, it is important to highlight the significance of the reception accorded to Controller General Olumode by his kinsmen. The warm welcome was not merely a celebration of his person, but a collective expression of gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing their son to such a critical national position.

That reception also served as a gesture of appreciation to Interior Minister, Honourable Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, whose leadership and support have created an enabling environment for the Controller General to demonstrate his competence and commitment. It was a moment of communal pride and national acknowledgement, not a political spectacle as some have tried to portray.

Communities across Nigeria take pride in the achievements of their sons and daughters who rise to national prominence. It is part of our social fabric. To begrudge a community for celebrating one of their own speaks more about the critics than it does about the event itself.

Furthermore, public office holders are not divorced from their roots. They have families, communities, and cultural ties that remain important. Visiting one’s hometown, especially during festive periods, is both natural and expected. It should not be turned into a basis for unwarranted attacks.

The narrative that seeks to paint the visit as insensitive or excessive simply does not hold water. There is no evidence that the trip disrupted operations or diverted critical resources in a way that compromised public safety. The outrage, therefore, appears manufactured.

It is also worth noting that leadership involves visibility. A Controller General does not cease to represent his office when he steps outside the capital. Every appearance, every movement, carries the weight of the institution. Proper protocol ensures that this representation is maintained at all times.

Critics must also be careful not to trivialise the importance of security arrangements for top officials. Nigeria’s security environment demands vigilance, and no responsible system would expose a high ranking official to unnecessary risk by stripping away essential protection.

More importantly, this episode reflects a broader tendency to personalise institutional challenges. Issues such as equipment shortages, where they exist, should be addressed through policy, planning, and resource allocation. They should not be unfairly pinned on a ceremonial or personal visit by the head of the agency.

The Controller General has continued to demonstrate dedication to his role, working within the framework provided to strengthen the Federal Fire Service. His efforts and commitment should be the focus of public discourse, not distractions built around routine activities.

There is also a need for a more balanced conversation about public service. Criticism is healthy in a democracy, but it must be grounded in facts and driven by a genuine desire for improvement. What we are witnessing in this case falls short of that standard.

The attempt to turn a simple homecoming into a national controversy does not advance any meaningful cause. Instead, it risks creating unnecessary tension and diverting attention from more pressing issues that require collective effort and serious engagement.

In truth, the warm reception given to Controller General Olumode was a celebration of national recognition, a thank you to the President, and an acknowledgement of the support from the Ministry of Interior. It was a moment of unity, not division.

At the end of the day, the facts remain clear. A senior public official travelled to his hometown during a major holiday, observed all necessary protocol, and was warmly received by his people. There is nothing unusual, improper, or scandalous about that.

The uproar is, in essence, nothing more than noise. It should neither distract from the serious business of governance nor undermine the dignity of an office that is vital to protecting lives and property across the nation.

<p
